It's a typical day in Dr. Laughlin's college level
ESL class.
"Today class," Dr.Laughlin began as she
tactfully sat on her desk, "we will be learning
about the audio-lingual method of teaching in
an ESL classroom."
The students were so excited! They had been
waited for this all semester!

hand in the air. Dr. Laughlin smiled-
"Yes, Stephanie?"
(Stephanie always had
something to say, which
was quite annoying at
times.)

"What exactly is the 'audio-lingual method'?"
Stephanie asked.
"Wonderful question, Stephanie! The audio-
lingual method is a teaching method based on
repetition and drills. There are four main parts
to this method." Dr. Laughlin proceeded to the
chalk board.

1. Repetition- Student repeats what the teacher
says
2. Inflection- Teacher says a word or
sentence. Student changes the form of word or
sentence
3. Replacement- Teacher says a sentence.
Student changes a word in a sentence.
4. Restatement- Teacher says a sentence.
Student rephrases the sentence.

Dr. Laughlin explained the four parts of the
audio-lingual method. She then provided an
example of repetition.
Teacher says: I want to buy some fruit
Students repeat: I want to buy some fruit
The students copy the teacher word for word.

says
2. Inflection- Teacher says a word or
sentence. Student changes the form of word or
sentence
3. Replacement- Teacher says a sentence.
Student changes a word in a sentence.

"An example of 'inflection' would be:
Teacher says: I want to buy some fruit
Students reply: I wanted to buy some fruit
This exercise gives practice with tense
changing. Past, present, and future can all be
used. The student has control over how the
verb is changed.
