In the place where David lives everybody has to
be the same. Nobody can have more than
five fingers or five toes, or be different in
anyway. If you are caught with more or less
than the normal, you are not a human.

If you are different, you must be sent away
with all the other people who are not normal.
This place is called "The Fringes", and "The
Fringes" is not a fun place. They do not have
enough food or water to survive, unlike
normal people have.

David remembers
seeing his first
different person. It
was a man eight
feet tall, with
super long arms
and legs. The man
was in a fight with
David's dad, and
had to run away
from the farm they
lived on fast.

David meets a new friend named Sophie.
They have so much fun together, until he
finds out Sophie has six toes. Sophie is NOT
normal, and David cannot see Sophie ever
again.

David's mom just had a new baby! David's
new baby sister is named Petra, they have a
special connection that cannot be explained.
They become very close and can talk with
their minds.

David, his two sisters (Petra and Anne), and
his best friend Rosalind realize that they all
have a special gift. They can all read minds
and send messages to each other without
speaking. They must now stick together and
keep it as a secret, because others will think
they are not normal.

Anne is getting married to a person who does
not have the gift. The others think it is a bad
idea because the gift has to be kept secret.
Anne tells her husband the secret, others find
out and they are sent to be killed.

The special kids now know that where they
live it is not safe at all. They have to run
away, to save themselves and meet people
just like them. Petra, being the youngest,
does not know anything that is going on.

Petra starts talking with her mind sending
thought shapes to a person very far away. A
lady that is trying to help them tells them
where to go and who to find. Petra is very
special out of the group because she can talk
to people from many, many miles away,
unlike the others.

David receives a
thought-shape from
a friend who has
been captured
warning them that
the government
knows about them
running off. The
government thinks
they are
dangerous, and
considers them not
to be human. The
kids are on the
move to find a safe
place.
