S4L2. Students will identify factors that affect the
survival or extinction of organisms such as adaptation,
variation of behaviors (hibernation), and external
features (camouflage and protection).
a. Identify external features of organisms that allow
them to survive or reproduce better than organisms
that do not have these features (for example:
camouflage, use of hibernation, protection, etc.).

Hello! My name is Dolores and I am a Dodo
bird. You might not have heard of me before
but it's okay. I'm extinct. That means all of
the dodo birds like me are gone. Dead.
Departed. Deceased.
But don't feel bad for me. You see, we
weren't adapted to our environment and
so we died off. But there are some animals
who have got the survival thing down.
Let me show you!
The lucky animals who are still living have some neat
adaptations that help them survive. This polar bear
has sharp claws and thick fur and skin to survive in
freezing temperatures. The polar bear also has large
front feet that act like paddles when the swim.
Other animals have a neat trick up their sleeves called camouflage.
This little tree frog is green like the trees in the rain forest where he
lives. His camouflage helps hide him from predators. Wait, where did
he go?
This is one of my favorites. This is a sand
lizard. He lives in the desert and has a
cool survival adaptation to avoid
becoming prey. When this little lizard is
being chased, it can literally drop its own
tail! That's one way to avoid becoming
somebodies dinner.
These animals may not look like they have anything in
common but they do! All of these animals hibernate, or sleep
through the winter. Many gather food to store with them
during their winter slumber. Can you say sleepover?
Oh this one is cool! These fish are called four-eyed butterfly
fish! They have a small dot on their back fin. This dot confuses
predators making them think its the eye. Then the fish can
swim away in the opposite direction! Maybe if I had that
adaptation I'd still be around.
Being a flightless bird didn't work out so
well for me, but these guys seem to be
doing okay! Penguins are masters of
adaptation. They have adapted to their
habitat, or the place that they live. Their
feathers overlap keeping cold water away
from their skin. They also have a layer of
blubber or fat which keeps them nice and
warm!
