This is the story of the Ugly Turkey.
A mother turkey was sitting on her eggs
when they began to crack. A baby turkey
hopped out of each egg and said, “Gobble,
Gobble.”
Mother Turkey saw that her biggest
egg still had not cracked. So she sat on it a bit
longer. Finally out of the big egg jumped an
ugly poult named Omac.
When Omac was old enough to go to
kindergarten, he left the nest to go to school.
Kindergarten was not easy for Omac.
All the other turkeys laughed and
made fun of the way he looked. He was
covered in brown, green, and black down.
At recess, Omac was often left out
by all of the other fine feathered fowl in his
class. Through his tears he would admire their
bright, sparkling down.
One day Omac’s teacher, Mrs. Turkey
noticed that the children were not including Omac in
their games. The turkeys had a classroom meeting
and went over their anti-bullying pledge, Gobble
Against Bullying.
The students began to include Omac. They
loved to play hide and seek. Omac was really good
at it for he was never found. He held the class
record for the best hider. Everyone wanted to know
Omac’s secret. The truth is Omac didn’t really know
what his secret was.
One November weekend while the poult
were playing a game of hide and seek in the forest,
along came Frankie and Fran Fox.
“Hello, turkey friends,” said Frankie “Fran
and I see that you are all playing our favorite
childhood game. May we join you?” The turkeys
were amazed at Frankie and Fran’s politeness.
“Of course” the young poult said. They
remembered Mrs. Turkey's lesson about including
everyone to play.
Frankie and Fran told the gang that
whoever they found was invited to their house
afterward for a wonderful feast of mashed
potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. “We’re in!”
Everyone scattered to his or her hiding place.
Omac and all of his friends ran to hide
as Frankie and Fran counted to 10. After an
hour of searching Frankie and Fran found
everyone except for Omac. “Come out
wherever you are” they all yelled, but Omac
was determined to remain the hiding
champion.
