Your heart is really a muscle. It is a little to the
left of the middle of your chest, and it's around
the size of your fist. There are lots of muscles
all over your body (in your arms, in your legs,
in your back, etc.)

But, the heart is special because of what it
does. The heart sends blood to every part your
body. The blood gives your body all the oxygen
and nutrients it needs, and it also carries away
waste, which we don't want to stay in our
bodies.

The heart has four chambers that are surrounded by
thick, muscular walls. It is between the lungs and just to
the left of the middle of the chest. The bottom part of
the heart is divided into two chambers called the right
and left ventricles, which pump blood out of the heart.

The upper part of the heart is made up of the other two
chambers of the heart, called the right and left atria.
The right and left atria receive the blood that comes to
the heart. The tricuspid valve separates the right atrium
from the right ventricle, and the mitral valve separates
the left atrium and the left ventricle.

Blood vessels carrying blood away from the heart are
called arteries. They are the thickest blood vessels, with
muscular walls that contract (tighten, tense, flex, etc.)
to keep the blood moving away from the heart and
through the body.

Unlike the aorta, the body's other main artery, the
pulmonary artery, carries blood without oxygen.
From the right ventricle, the pulmonary artery
divides into right and left branches, on the way to
the lungs where blood picks up oxygen.

Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart are
called veins. Veins have the same three layers that
arteries do, but they are thinner and less flexible. The
two largest veins are the superior and inferior vena
cavae. The words superior and inferior do not mean that
one vein is better than the other, but that they are
located above and below the heart.

A group of tiny capillaries connects the arteries and
veins. Even though they're tiny, the capillaries are one
of the most important parts of the circulatory system
because it is through them that nutrients and oxygen
are delivered to the cells.

A summary of how the blood flows through the Circulatory
System would be:
Deoxygenated Blood → Superior Vena Cava → Inferior
Vena Cava → Right Atrium → Tricuspid Valve → Right
Ventricle → Pulmonary Valve → Pulmonary Artery →
Both Lungs → Carbon Dioxide & Oxygen are
exchanged in the Capillaries → Pulmonary Veins to
Heart → Left Atrium → Mitral Valve → Left Ventricle →
Aortic Valve → Aorta → Trasnporting Oxgenated Blood
to Body Cells.
