But what is waste?
Waste can cover a few different things. This includes the things you
throw out into the rubbish bin at home, the mess caused after a house
is knocked down and even old food that has gone bad. Basically, it is
anything that is thrown out and that needs to be handled correctly so it
doesn't harm the environment.
If this waste is not managed properly, it can lead to big problems.

means taking care of our rubbish is something that we need
to be watching carefully to prevent it from becoming a big problem.

Waste management includes the collection,
transportation and disposal of garbage, sewage
and other waste products making sure it is dealt
with properly.
This waste can come in all shapes and sizes.
Some of it comes from plants, known as organic
waste. Other waste is known as E-waste because
it comes from electronic devices, such as
computers, iPods and tablets. Still, other things
can be dangerous to our health so it is called
hazardous waste. Recyclable waste is the waste
that can be broken down and used again for
different things, saving us from finding more of
the same thing in other places.
All of this waste can come from either your house,
big businesses or factories, power plants and
other big places who have special permission to
use certain items that can be dangerous

For example, many batteries that are used in TV remotes and
electronic devices are thrown out incorrectly. So these
batteries make their way to a landfill site, where rubbish is
dumped, and put into big holes. The same happens with light
bulbs and old mobile phones. Once these items are in the
ground, they can start to leak dangerous chemicals such as
Mercury, Cadmium or Lead. This then makes its way into
water streams, contaminating more water than you could
drink in your life - that is more than 75 000 Litres!

the environment around us in very bad ways.

These leaked chemicals would also contaminate the soil around it,
ruining its possibility to be used for anything useful.
Another thing that could form in the landfill is caused a leachate. This
is a liquid that forms as it trickles down through the waste, picking up
certain chemicals and making it very dangerous and poisonous.
Instead, it is easier for us, and better for the environment if we put
rubbish in the right place - in the bin. In some cases, there are lots
more than the standard 3 bin system used in many places today.
Check out this one as an example. It has room for cans, plastic,
cardboard, paper and glass - all materials used for recycling.

Improper management of waste can also lead to:
- Large ecological footprints
- Damage to natural heritage sites
- Widespread pollution in the environment and
- The release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere
An ecological footprint is another way of saying how big
someone's impact on the environment is. So if someone has a BIG
ecological footprint, they are having a big, negative impact on the
environment. However, if someone has a small footprint, they
aren't having much of an impact at all.
Natural heritage sites are places that have been known to have a
special value and has then had protection placed over it to make
sure it isn't destroyed. However, improper waste management can
damage these sites by slowly eating away at the site. One example
is the Great Barrier Reef, which has been protected in hopes to
avoid killing rare, native species.

Improper handling of rubbish can lead to problems for people as
well as the environment.
The water that can be contaminated from the dangerous chemicals
in batteries, light bulbs and mobile phones can be really harmful
for people. Depending on how much they consume, they could
become really sick or even die!
Secondly, making sure that the local area stays clean will help
everyone to stay clean too. This means the area you live in will be
nicer - the air will be better, water will be safer to drink and there
won't be rubbish lying around everywhere because people don't
leave rubbish on the ground.
Also, your local council can make money from the materials you
give to them to recycle. That way they will have more money to
put back into your local area and make it nicer still. Just like the
photo on the next page.

years. The local council put lots of money into it to make it a nice place for people to
come and exercise, enjoy their lunch and enjoy the water.

things to try and stop the problem

The government has responded in many different ways. Some
on a national level, some at a state level and others have
responded locally. These different governments are working
together to reduce the waste made by Australians.
One way the government responded was by introducing a catch
phrase to get people to reuse the things they may have thrown
out. The phrase went like "Reduce, reuse, recycle." It was a
simple and catchy way for people to remember to recycle their
waste.
The Australian government also placed limits on certain things,
like water, so that they wouldn't be wasted. Now there are
limits as to using water for things other than drinking.
