What is a 48 mile "shortcut"? The Panama
Canal of course! This 8th wonder of the world
cuts of nearly 800 miles from getting from
the atlantic to the pacific ocean or vise virsa.
The idea of the canal was first brought up in
the 1600's by the Spanish but was carried out
in the 1800's and 1900's by France and the US
The French had attempted construction of the
canal in the 1880's,but unfortunately didn't
finish it and gave up.The two main reasons the
French gave up was because A:the company
that was supporting the build became
bankrupt and B:many men died because of
malaria which is caused by mosquitoes, and
Panama has the perfect place for them to live
and reproduce,
The Panama Canal was successfully built from
1904 to 1914 by the US.Once the canal was
complete the U.S. held a strip of land running
the approximately 50 miles across the isthmus
of Panama.
Today(2014) the Panama Canal is being
widened. That is because only a certain size
could go through and it was a very tight
squeeze. So the Panama Canal (after
construction) will be able to fit super ships of
the future and even some gigantic cruise lines.
