Once upon a time there were two siblings by
the names of Jem and Scout Finch. They lived
in a little town called Maycomb County.

Their father, Atticus, was a lawyer. He had
always gave them advice that they needed.

Scout went to her first day of school. There,
she met Walter Cunningham. Walter's family
didn't have as much money as hers did.

Scout had hit Walter in school because he got
her in trouble. Jem thought that Scout was
being unfair, and so he invited Walter to their
house for dinner.

As Calpurnia the cook was serving dinner,
Walter started to pour syrup all over his food.
Scout, stunned, yelled at him for doing so.

Calpurnia was very disappointed in Scout.
Even if Walter's ways were strange to them,
he was a guest, and should be treated with
respect.

and if they don't, you have no right to
yell at them. Everyone who enters this
house is a guest. You should not act all
high and mighty around them.

The next day, Jem and Scout were bored and
decided to explore the mysterious house down
the street where Boo Radley lived.

Mr. Radley's house was always an object of
mystery. Children at school were always
telling stories about Boo Radley doing terrible
things.

One day, Scout went to Miss Maudie's house.
She always had yummy food to share. Scout
wanted to know if any of the rumors were
true. Miss Maudie warned that not everything
you hear is true.

really in that house?
Why doesn't he come out?

house if you didn't want to
come out? As a boy, Arthur
Radley had always spoken nicely
to me. Those rumors are from
the mean neighbors.

In attempts to draw Boo Radley out, Jem had
a plan to shoot a note into his side window.
Scout kept watch outside.
