THE S.A.M.E. PROJECT
THE ORIGIN OF THE TOWN NAME
In the city of San Giovanni Rotondo, in English St. John Round, in the promontory of Gargano there is a small church, nicknamed the Round for its circular shape and dedicated to St. John Baptist. It is said that the name of the town comes from the shape of the church.
ST. JOHN BAPTIST CHURCH
The church is divided in two distinct parts: the Round and the new church with a nave.
The Round was built in about VI century and the new one in about XI century.
Three steps lead to the nave. On the floor there are two hatches leading to ossuary, where once there was the graveyard.
The four walls of the nave are painted of sacred scenes, now deteriorated by time and people.
The nave leads to the Round by a round wide and low arch.
The Round has a circular plan covered by a dome. On top of the dome there are some little windows, that illuminate the church.
Its walls are painted of images that represent the Apocalypse and Saint Francis on Gargano no longer visible.
THE HISTORIC CENTER
The town is also famous for its historic center, which is full of little roads and churches.
Sant'Orsola Church is one of these.
THE CENTER OF THE TOWN
The town has also got a nice center with a nice square and many shops
The Hospital"Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" was created and inaugarated by St. Pio and it is a highly classified religious hospital.
ISBReMIT (Institute for Stem-cell Biology, Regenerative Medicine and Innovative Therapies) is the new structure for genetic research.
