1/4 smidge of fear, 1 dollop of dejection, 1/8 cup of irritation, 1/2 pinch of zest
Rick was leaving South Carolina for an internship. One of the last things he said to his brother, a four year old kid named Jacob was “When I come home we will go on a ride to visit Mrs. Cantaloupe, Mr. Papaya, and Sauce.” The four year old, like a lot of four year olds, loved cartoons or anything that resembled it.
Rick really hated the people who stood outside the stores dressed up, but before he left he would say anything to make his brother smile. Now, he was dreading his pledge, and the fact he had to go visit his family. He was holding news and 1/4 smidge of fear. All he kept thinking about was dinner.
Soon, though, dinner would be the last thing on Rick's mind. As he stood by the bus stop, waiting for the 11:16 bus to take him the forty minutes home from the airport, he saw them. Grimacing, he rolled his suitcase closer to his seat and buried his head in his phone, making a point to ignore the large, costumed fruit-people hobbling towards him.
