The Codally team
European Code Week 2019
This is the second part of Codally's team collaborative book.
So many motivated teachers participated in European Code Week 2019 with their students. Moreover as we all love challenges we link our activities. Our alliance consist of 67 colleagues and 49 schools/institutes from 4 countries.

We had already cοme to know the life, the work and the way the famous artist Yayoi Kusama (our beloved grandmother) was painting, through her paintings and various videos. The kids voted the painting they liked the most...

![](https://images2-cdn.storyjumper.net/transcoder.png?trim&id=wy-n95zaamwf-5ki6w48dv&maxw=256&maxh=256)
and with activating their imagination they created a story:
"Yayoi was very worried because some colored irregular polka dots left the painting. We need to help her! We will paint many spots and send them to her. How, though? But with our Happybot, who wants everyone to be happy and blissful. This will take action! Just plan it properly .. The children painted gorgeous spots...
![](https://images2-cdn.storyjumper.net/transcoder.png?trim&id=z2-god52zp4w-5ki6oxmnv&maxw=256&maxh=256)
put them on the appropriate floor mesh, and programmed Happybot to take them to Yayoyi. So Yayoi was happy again!
In the next step, the children were given the following worksheet where they had to draw the path followed by the robot and write the code.

During our project which concerns "The colours of the rainbow", we watched the video "The fairy tale with colours". The kids painted the fundamental scenes (in pairs).

Finally, the arrows were placed on the carpet and the path was drawn on a work sheet, as well as the code was written.

Coding Fairy tales' secrets
"The Lighthouse"
Towards this workshop program, our target was to introduce the open source technology to the kids. We have been based on the open source hardware ARDUINO UNO and the relative open source software ARDUINO IDE (wiring C programming) and ARDUBLOCK (a graphical programming language based on environment).
![](https://images2-cdn.storyjumper.net/transcoder.png?trim&id=23-jqbe1mi04s-5l5pfw709&maxw=256&maxh=256)
![](https://images2-cdn.storyjumper.net/transcoder.png?trim&id=rq-3ryb0rgp-5l5pl1xbx&maxw=256&maxh=256)
Using these "tools" and based on a fairy tale related to a lighthouse, the kids were motivated to produce a unique pattern of blink for each season, i.e., the time duration that a LED remains ON and OFF during a time period.

This technical construction has been included in a lighthouse craft that each group of kids made with simple materials.

![](https://images2-cdn.storyjumper.net/transcoder.png?trim&id=3o-nnqk89a42y-5l43m84ht&maxw=256&maxh=256)
The activity is part of the e Twinning program, Blocks: always and everywhere.
Our young pupils have to direct bee bot to P. Mondrian painting, by placing the right arrows as well as finding the correct paths according to the instructions given to them.
Activities take place in pairs of students between partner schools.

Get in order!!
The specific unplugged activity is based on the concept of file management and more specifically of generating and naming files. Students who have co-decided the contents and the title of each folder will proceed to “store” their produced material (documents) to the corresponding folder.`

Names' Journey!!
Based on the idea of the hidden object game, the students should discover the hidden puzzles by following the given instructions (they are driven according to the instructions- left, right, go ahead-).
![](https://images2-cdn.storyjumper.net/transcoder.png?trim&id=60-xc29ybp79v-5krsn2ktj&maxw=512&maxh=512)
The game is little bit tricky because when the student finds the object that looking for, the game does not end since he or she has to solve the puzzles (the pixel art technique is utilized in this case) in order to discover what is hidden behind the code.

9th Kindergarten of Perama, Greece
Students based on the thinking routine "a painting as a beginning of a story" of Artful Thinking Program (Harvard Project Zero- Visible Thinking) and created a story. We choose one of Morgan's Weistling paintings and it was the middle part of our story.
![](https://images2-cdn.storyjumper.net/transcoder.png?trim&id=5y-rjqtfn9yur-5kp6ajh1b&maxw=256&maxh=256)
Some students drew scenes of the story. We put the drawings on the floor slope and there were kids who became robots and the rest of them were the programmers. Each programmer navigated the robot ,on the floor slope, following the evolution of the story.

After that students programmed our robot mouse to move, based on our story too. This time the robot mouse transformed into the hero of the story and students were the programmers.

One of our student's father, who is a chef, came to the Kindergarten to cook with us healthy cereal bars for our breakfast.
After the visit, the children searched on the internet pictures of the ingredients used by the chef.

Bee bot helps kids to present themselves. As they program it towards pictures-prompts(eg:favourite colour, friends, book etc),they present themselves to the rest of the team based on these hints. Then,by writing the code on the paper, they mark the way bee bot moved.
Children read the code and colour the squares.A "magic"picture is revealed...

BeeBot help us learn the five senses, based on their characteristics. Inside the squares of the grid we place in random images depicting one of the 5 senses of our body. The children move the BeeBot to the 5 senses with the appropriate commands, name them and indicate what they can do with this sense.
The 5 BeeBot Senses!

18th Kindergarten
of
Agios Dimitrios
"Make a move, tell a story, make your Beebot a robo... teller"
Children wrote a tale through a random selection of images based on key parts of creative writing of a story such as place, time, hero, and plot. Then they placed these images on the squares of the grid and they narrated the tale by programing BeeBot to move in the right images. After that they program Beebot to move in a different order of images so that to create a new tale.

Private Kindergarten of Kirezi Athanasia
During code week the students of our school were introduced in the coding world. Some already had some experience from last year while the younger ones met Beebot for the first time.
Activities
At first, the students themselves became the robots on a large-sized floor mat with grids and their partners acted as the programmers. The next activity was an unplugged one; the students draw on a paper arrows in order to reach a certain point. Then they were able to programme “Beebot” to follow routes on the mat. All activities were developed considering “Artful thinking”. The painting “The Goldfish” by Paul Klee inspired students to create a story in which the protagonist, a goldfish, has an adventure.
