Kurt Cobain is best known as the lead singer,
songwriter, and guitarist of the Seattle rock
band Nirvana. He is known as one of the many
artists who pushed the wave of grunge rock.
However, his private life was not even close to
glamorous. He struggled with being homeless,
drug abuse, marriage problems, almost losing a
child to social services, and fighting with his
parents. Even though he may have not had the
best life, it certainly wasn't boring!

Kurt Donald Cobain was born February 20, 1967
to Donald and Wendy Cobain. He also had a
sister named Kimberly Cobain. This family,
however, would not be together much longer, as
only 8 years later, Cobain's parents divorced.
The Divorce had a large effect on Cobain's life,
and in one interview, he managed to talk a little
bit about this hard time in his life.
"I remember feeling ashamed, for some reason.
I was ashamed of my parents. I couldn't face
some of my friends at school anymore, because
I desperately wanted to have the classic typical
family, "Mother, Father". I wanted that security,
so I resented my parents for quite a few years
because of that."

The Elementary years of cobain's life were not
the best. Besides his parents getting divorced,
he was also diagnosed with a very strong case of
ADHD. He had trouble concentrating and would
often get in trouble only because of his lack of
medication for the problem. Cobain had to move
in with his dad about a year after the divorce,
and began to rebel against his parents and
resent them. In an interview he talked a little
more about how all of this had affected him, and
how he despised it:
"It had a big impact on my life. I became much
more withdrawn."

Throughout his childhood, Cobain went through
many phases, much like many children his age.
However, his were a little stronger, considering
his emotional past. At one point, he chose
stuntman Evil Knievel as his idol, and tried to do
his own stunts. He even went as far as to set off
fireworks from his chest, attached to a metal
plate! However, his new attitude would not stop
the constant burden he had to deal with of his
divorced parents, maneuvering all of his life
choices and changing his life forever, a lot more
than most may think.

In high school, cobain's rebellious actions took a
very dark turn. He did all drugs that were
available to him, with the ironic exception of PCP
because the stories he'd heard about PCP scared
him. In 1983 he moved back with his mother in
Aberdeen, where he attended Weatherway very
shortly, and focused on art a lot more in school,
often drawing during class. After a few months,
he dropped out, and his mother gave him an
ultimatum: get a job or leave. Within a week,
Cobain was staying at friends' houses. He also
sometimes stayed under a bridge over the
Wishkah River, which inspired the song
'Something In The Way'.

During this time, Cobain often found odd jobs to
work around Aberdeen, and did make enough
money to buy his first apartment in June of
1985. Unfortunately, after only a few months
Cobain was evicted and had to move in with a
friend. Cobain's bad life decisions didn't just end
with addiction to drugs. In 1986, he was
arrested for trespassing. This would be the first
of many things that would tarnish his criminal
record. In 1986, however, Cobain moved into his
first house, making rent by working part time as
a janitor. He began to pull his life together and
renew his interest in music. This is around the
time Nirvana began.
