Standard: MGSE3.MD.4 Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units— whole numbers, halves, or quarters.

“Good morning, class,” said Mrs. Dover. “Good morning, Mrs. Dover.” shouted the class. “Today class, I want to talk to you all about a school assignment,” said Mrs. Dover. “What kind of school assignment, Mrs. Dover?” asked Angel.

“I’m glad you asked, Angel. Class, as you all know we have been learning how to measure objects, and how to plot data on a line plot. I have witnessed great improvement throughout the last few days, but I want to put your measuring and graphing skills through a task." said Mrs. Dover.

"What kind of task?" asked Nate. "I'm glad you asked Nate. For this task, you all will be working with a partner. I want you and your partner to go outside and explore the great outdoors. I want both of you to measure as many things as you can find. After you measure something you have found in the woods, I want one of you to write down what you measured and how long it was. After that, you all will create a line plot using all of the data everyone collected ." explained Mrs. Dover.

"This assignment sounds fun Mrs. Dover!" yelled Alex. "I think so too, Alex. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you all something. The team who measures the shortest or the longest object will win a surprise." said Mrs. Dover.

"A surprise? What kind of surprise? shouted Chloe. " You all will just have to wait and see," said Mrs. Dover.

"Now it's time to find out who your partner will be. Listen for your name to be called. Angel and Nate, Alex and Chloe, and Raylan and Ava. I hope you and your partner have fun." said Mrs. Dover.

"How much time will we have to complete this assignment, Mrs. Dover?" asked Alex. "You and your partner will have one day to complete this assignment," explained Mrs. Dover.

"Come on. Ava! We better go get started!" shouted Raylan. "Us too!" yelled Nate.

The next day, all of the students woke up bright and early to get a head start into the woods. Each student grabbed a ruler, pencil, and paper and headed toward the woods.
"Come on Chloe! I see a flower we could measure," shouted Alex. "Wow, Alex! This flower is 10 1/4 inches!" shouted Chloe. "Look, Chloe! Measure that tiny worm!" shouted Alex. "Wow, this worm is only half an inch long! We got to plot it on our line plot," said Chloe.

"What are we going to measure, Nate? said, Angel. "I'm not sure. We need to use our rulers to measure something, but everything is too big for our rulers," said Nate. "Look! A baby turtle! Lets measure him!" yelled Chloe. "Wow Chloe, the turtle is 9 and a half inches. I better plot this on our line plot," said Nate.

Nate! Look on that leaf! There is a beetle! Woah! The beetle is only half an inch long. We got to write this down four our line plot!" shouted Chloe.

"Hurry, Ava! We got to hurry!" yelled Raylan. "Wait, look! There is a huge leaf we can measure. This pinecone is 10 inches exactly. I'm writing it down for our line plot." said Ava. "Good work, Ava," said Raylan.

Raylan turned his head and saw a tiny frog jumping around. "Chloe, I found a frog! He is 1 and one fourth of an inch. We for sure need to write this down. We don't want to forget to plot it on our line plot graph!" shouted Raylan.
