Archeology has uncovered important documents that reveal the human occupation of Almada, from the Calico Libertus, 3000 years before Christ, to the present day; five thousand years of history where various peoples are inserted, namely Phoenicians, Romans and Muslims, with the most diverse cultures and forms of life that, necessarily, are reflected in traditional gastronomy.

From the pages of the History of Almadean gastronomy, flavored with history, Al-Madan pastries are the best and sweetest we can find in the rich history of the city of Almada, whose foundation is lost in the memory of time and which name of the Arab toponym Al-Madan, or “the gold mine”, because gold was explored in the Almadean lands, in the Tagus sands and in the well-known Adiça mine.
