I dedicate this book to my students, who have worked so hard to create their own biographies. I'm proud of you!

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky.
When he was nine years old, his mother died. A year later, Abraham got a new stepmother. He called her his "angel mother."

Abraham loved books. Sometimes he walked many miles just to borrow one.
In 1830, when he was 21, his family moved to Illinois. Abraham helped his father build a new house and plant corn.

Abraham was tall and thin but he was very strong. In 1831, he made a flatboat and floated it down the Mississippi River to New Orleans.
When he got there, he saw a slave market for the first time. Black slaves were being sold like cattle. He hated it and never forgot what he saw.

Abraham always loved to tell funny stories and everyone loved him.
In 1836, he became a lawyer and moved to Springfield, Illinois. He got involved in politics and served as a Congressman.
He married Mary Todd and they had four sons, Robert, Edward, William and Thomas.

Abraham spoke out against slavery. He had many debates with Senartor Stephen Douglas. He became famous. Two years later, he was elected President of the United States.
