posillipo is a hilly dristict of naples, one of the most elegant and prestigious areas of the city. the name derives from the Greek Pausilypon which means "respite from danger" or "that eliminates pain", this reassuring name well represent the sensation experienced by the inhabitants of posillipo and the tourists who visit it. here is the famous scoglio with the fenestrella that inspired the composition of the song Marechiaro by Salvatore Di Giacomo.

In August Alì was still in Italy. He decided to visit his paternal grandmother Sara, who lived in a small town in the province of Avellino, called Mercogliano. He took the bus for Mercogliano early in the morning and arrived at his grandma’s home at 8 o’clock.
They were very happy to come together. The weather and the environment were beautiful, ideal for relaxing and sightseeing, so they got the idea to visit a religious build, a Baroque masterpiece called “Abbazia del Loreto”.
It is an Abbey with a suggestive garden, having an octagonal plan, and a well-stocked library.
MERCOGLIANO and LORETO ABBEY

After about two hours, Ali and his grandma went for a walk in the tree-lined avenue of Mercogliano until the funicular station, which connected the town to Montevergine.
They took the funicular and in just 7 minutes arrived at the Sanctuary of Montevergine.
MERCOGLIANO

MONTEVERGINE
The cathedral was a national monument. In the chapel, Alì remained fascinated by the painting of the “Madonna of Montevergine”.
After visiting the Sanctuary, he and Sara stopped in a little shop of typical products and tasted a liqueur, “Amaro Benedettino” produced by the Benedictine monks in the Loreto Abbey. It was a bitter, herbal liqueur that Alì really liked. For this reason he bought also a bottle of a similar green liqueur called “Anthémis” at the cost of 27 euro.

In the evening, following the advice of his grandmother, Alì walked in the Medieval village of Mercogliano, where was taking place an international festival of street performers: “Castellarte”.
In the streets and alleys, different artists were dancing, playing and singing in direct contact with people.
CASTELLARTE

Alì had fun, ate barbecued bacon, caciocavallo cheese and bread, drunk a glass of red wine and at 23.30 came back to home to sleep, because he was too tired.
The next day a new adventure awaited him!

AVELLINO
Ali decided to go to a town near Mercogliano, Avellino.
The city was heavily bombed in WWII. It was rebuilt, only to be impacted by a destructive earthquake in 1980 that affected the entire central-eastern area of Campania.
Because of the circumstances in the last century, the city has few important historical monuments.

Ali visited 2 beautiful churches:
the Avellino Cathedral (originally built in the 1100s) and Our Lady of the Rosary (rebuilt after the earthquake and recently renovated).

The region in the mountains of Avellino, known as Irpinia, is famous for producing Fiano, Greco di Tufo and Taurasi.
So Ali decided to join a grape harvest and he had a lot of fun spending some hours in the nature of Irpinia.
Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni national Park
In August Ali was still in the South of Italy and he decided to visit the second largest Italian park .

Ali’s journey went on with a new adventure... he arrived to Teggiano for meeting his Italian penpal Maria for the first time

Beaches in Cilento National Park

It's a hot summer day, Ali decides to take a boat trip, discovering the most beautiful beaches: White Cove, Buondormire Bay, Natural Arch, Dune Beach...

Caves of Pertosa
Ali decides to visit Pertosa Caves

History of Pertosa Caves
The caves of pertosa are located in the massif of the Alburni Mountains, are one of the focal geosites of the Geopark "Cilento" and have two uniqueness:
- Are the only caves in Italy where you can navigate an underground river, the Negro;
- But it is also the only ones in Europe that conserve the remains of a pile-dwelling village dating back to the 2nd millennium BC.

Padula Charterhouse

Ali walked through the streets of Teggiano, he saw the Padula Charterhouse and curious went to visit it

The Padula Charterhouse, or San Lorenzo, is a charterhouse located in Padula, in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno. It is the first charterhouse to have been built in Campania, anticipating that of San Martino in Naples and San Giacomo in Capri.
The Padula Charterhouse was built thanks to Tommaso Severino, Count of Marsico and Lord of Vallo di Diano on 28 January 1306.

MEDITERRANEAN DIET
Ali was so curious to taste some typical products of Mediterranean diet. This place was definided the stronghold of it by Ancel Keys, a famous American nutritionist

The lagane and beans is a typical Lucanian recipe. In every region of Italy there is a version of pasta and legumes that has strongly characterized the local gastronomy. In Basilicata, lagane with beans have always represented a substantial, tasty and very nutritious dish, especially for the peasant classes. Today this dish has remained strong in tradition, even if more and more often the lard has been replaced by extra virgin olive oil.
LAGANE AND BEANS

The first who tried to market these biscuits in 1820 were Maria Advino and her husband Giuseppe Dandero, owners of the first Bar Caffè in Torriglia. Since then the town has been considered the home of the canestrello or canestrelletto as it is still called there today and where at the beginning of June it is the protagonist of the Torriglia Canestrelletto Festival.
Ali is ready for a new day, for a new adventure...
