Water pollution occurs when harmful substances—often chemicals or microorganisms—contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading water quality and rendering it toxic to humans or the environment.
What is water pollution?

Water is uniquely vulnerable to pollution. Known as a “universal solvent,” water is able to dissolve more substances than any other liquid on earth. It’s the reason we have brilliant blue waterfalls. It’s also why water is so easily polluted. Toxic substances from farms, towns, and factories readily dissolve into and mix with it, causing water pollution.

How do we detect
water pollution?
Water pollution is detected in laboratories, where small samples of water are analysed for different contaminants
Living organisms such as fish can also be used for the detection of water pollution.
Specific properties of these organisms can give information on the sort of pollution in their environment.
Laboratories also use computer models to determine
what dangers there can be in certain waters.

The effects of organic effluents on receiving waters ?
Organic pollutants originate from domestic sewage (raw or treated), urban run-off, industrial (trade) effluents and farm wastes
Organic effluents also frequently contain large quantities of suspendid solids which reduce the light available to photosynthetic organisms and, on settling out, alter the characteristics of the river bed, rendering it an unsuitable habitat for many invertebrates.
Organic wastes from people and their animals may also be rich in disease-causing (pathogenic) organisms.

Water pollution
is the release of substances into bodies of water that makes water unsafe for human use and disrupts aquatic ecosystems. Water pollution can be caused by a plethora of different contaminants, including toxic waste, petroleum, and disease-causing microorganisms.

Effects on Health
What can you do to help?
Save water - Fresh and clean water is a precious resource. Don't waste it! Take shorter showers, ask your parents not to water the lawn, make sure the toilet isn't running, and don't leave the faucet running. Don't use weed killer - Ask your parents if you can pull the weeds in the yard so they don't need to use weed killer (an herbicide). Scrape your plates clean into the trash and don't put grease into the kitchen drain. Trash - Always pick up your trash, especially when at the beach, lake, or river.
