Winter was over,
the cold chill had gone,
high in the sky
the spring sun shone.
Basking in the warmth
of the suns’ soothing glow,
was Benson the Brat……..
and he was ready to go!
Benson was naughty,
always on alert.
Seizing every moment,
but careless and overt.
The warmth of the sun
had left him feeling frisky.
With him in this mood
everything became RISKY.
Benson thought about
some jokes he could play,
and noticed the family
had all gone away.
So Benson the Brat
planned an all-out assault,
with a confused Dee for Dog
being the final result.
The plan was quite complex in its design,
but Benson just knew
it would all work out fine.
He was so confident in his ability,
that instead of preparing,
he enjoyed the tranquility.
In his mind’s eye
Benson was stealth
and like lightening.
He would sneak up on Dee
and the result would be frightening!
Dee would jump so high
he would be able to abscond,
and before she could land
he would hide near the pond,
Dee for dog would never
even know what had hit her,
and Benson would be long gone-
in case she was bitter.
Benson would then be able
to crawl under the log,
hidden from view of both
the chickens and dog.
This would give him another chance
to give Dee a fright,
and the chickens would mask his escape with
flurry and flight.
Once again Dee would not know
what was so frightening,
and Benson would escape as he was
quicker than lightening.
Then for a third chance
to make Dee jump,
Benson just had to wait
behind the old tree stump.
When Dee walks by confused
and looking for a friend,
he could spring off the stump
and tap Dee’s rear end.
This would make her
turn around very quickly,
spinning her into the rose –
oh so prickly!
The perfect plan to surprise Dee
not once but thrice.
He was sure he could convince her
that it must be the mice.
She would never know for sure
that it was Benson,
he would pretend he was sleeping
and did not notice the tension.
Benson was excited
by the plan in his head.
He waited for Dee
to go back to her bed.
He gave her a while
to doze off to sleep,
he wanted her slumber
to be restful and deep.
The deeper her sleep,
the more dramatic the waking.
He wanted her to jump high
and land with legs shaking.
Now he prepared himself
to be as quick as a ninja,
so fast he became a streak of
brown, black and ginger.
Slowly and stealthily
Benson started to creep,
cautiously looking for signs
Dee was asleep.
Softly he padded
through the green clover,
navigating obstacles,
moving under and over.
He was sure that he had
performed the perfect sneak,
but he didn’t see Dee for dog
taking a peak.
As he steadied himself
to jump into the air,
Dee turned and barked,
raising all Benson's hair!
Benson had already launched into his jump,
the fright sent him flying
and he landed with a thump.
When he came down
he was all in a flutter,
shaking like it was
his legs that were butter.
The chickens were curious
about all the commotion,
Benson tried to run
but was stuck in slow motion.
The chickens surrounded him
one, two
and three,
so Benson jumped high
to try and break free.
His view had been blocked
so he didn’t quite see,
that the direction he jumped in
landed him in a tree.
Dangling tentatively over the pond,
Benson searched frantically
for a way to abscond.
Slowly
he felt his grip fade away.
He could see that below him
was Gardener Bay.
Smack in the middle
was a big water bowl,
and it was so cold that he let a
"meyoooowwwwl".
