On April 7, the corvettes "Unión" and "Pilcomayo" sailed from Callao.

On April 12 they encountered the Chilean corvette "Magallanes" at the height of Punta Chipana, which they approached.

At 11:15 am, when the ships were close, the combat flags were raised.

The "Syndicate", in order not to lose distance from the target, ordered the "Pilcomayo" to put out the fires.
