Over 350,000 joined the military to serve during World War II. While the US was against having women serve in combat, they did provide important support for troops at the front lines.
The Women's Army Corps (WAC) and the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) were specific created by the US government to provide a place for women to serve.

Women took to the skies, flying B-29 and B-26 bombers, freeing up men for combat.
Over one thousand women made up the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program. The head of the WASP program was Jacqueline Cochran, who would later be the first female pilot to break the sound barrier.

Over 50,000 women served as nurses during the war, taking them the closest to the front lines.

77 American nurses were taken as prisoners of war (POW) and held from 1942-1945 in the Philippines. They provided life-saving care to POWs and were later known as the Angels of Bataan and Corregidor. All survived and were released in 1945.

10% of all war correspondents during World War II were women. Female journalists were not given the same access as men to the front lines, but found ways to get their story.

Martha Gellhorn smuggled onto a hospital ship to get to Normandy, and was the first woman to report on the D-Day invasion.
