There once was a King and Queen, and 

they very much wanted a child. They 

waited several years, and the Queen gave 

birth to a baby daughter.

They had the baby christened, and the 

King and Queen prepared a magnificent 

feast. There were six good fairies of the 

kingdom, and they were invited as guests 

of honor. The fairies gathered after the feast 

to give the baby their gifts, and the first fairy 

gave her the gift of beauty. The other fairies 

gave their gifts, and those gifts were 

happiness, goodness, grace, and health. Just 

as the sixth fairy was ready to give her gift, the 

seventh fairy, the most wicked and old fairy, 

burst in angrily.

Having no gift to give, the seventh fairy 

screamed out a terrible curse. "On her 

sixteenth birthday, the Princess will prick her 

finger, and she will die!"

After saying this, she disappeared in a cloud 

of smoke, and a terrible silence fell across the 

room

Then, the sixth fairy spoke, and she said, "I 

cannot undo the spell, but I can soften it. The 

Princess will not die, but she will fall into a 

deep sleep for one hundred years."
