The father of the Jewish people was Abraham.
They really didn't have one specific leader. In
1800 B.C., Abraham and his family moved to
Canaan, Egypt. Between 1300 and 1200 B.C., the
Hebrews escaped slavery with the help of Moses.
On the trip to Egypt, Moses wrote the Ten
Commandments. The Hebrews wondered around
for 40 years. After that, they returned to Canaan.

The Jewish bible is called the Torah. The Ten
Commandments were part of a code of laws
delivered to Moses. The Hebrews were told to
stay true to their covenant with God.

Prophets interpreted the Ten Commandments
and taught the people about them. The Jews
believed that they had a duty to worship God
and live justly with one another. Their moral
was to live in accordance with God's laws.

Christianity started as a movement within
Judaism. Historians believe that around 6 B.C., a
Jew named Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Judea.
He was baptized by John the Baptist. At age 30,
he began public ministry. The Roman governor
Pontius Pilate accused him of defying the authority
of Rome. He ordered Jesus to be crucified. Three
days later, his body was gone, and began
appearing to his followers. The Gospels go on to
say that then he ascended into heaven. After that,
Christianity spread rapidly.

The Bible, Ten Commandments, and Epistles
were among some of the Christian writings. In
the early years, Roman attention was focused
on the land of Jesus' birth and on the Jews.
The Jews tried many times to break away from
the Romans. Christians also wanted to break
away from the Romans because they refused
to worship Roman gods.

The Christians basically had the same beliefs
as the Jews, because they were a branch of
Judaism. Christians believe in more of a
personal relationship with God. They also
believed that humans needed the grace of God
to be saved.

Hinduism begun as a collection of beliefs that
developed slowly over time. There is no single
human leader. It originates from Vedas, so the
Vedas, or even God alone would have been
considered the one true leader.

The teacher's commandments were known as
the Upanishads. They were written as
dialogues, or discussions, between a student
and teacher.

Hindus believe in reincarnation and karma.
They say that karma follows on reincarnation
after another. Their beliefs determined what
they could eat and the way they ate it.

Hinduism led to the rise of Buddhism.
Siddhartha Guatama was the founder of
Buddhism. After a long time, he left his palace
to seek enlightenment.

The four main ideas about enlightenment were
called The Four Noble Truths. Enlightenment is
what everyone wanted to accomplish.

Buddhism had almost the exact beliefs as
Hinduism. Buddhists believed in
enlightenment, or wisdom. They all wanted to
achieve that.
