"STORY OF THE MONTH "
AKÇA PAKÇA PINAR
There was an adorable village school in Çanakkale, a province of the Marmara Region. This village school took the name of the village where it was located. Forty students were studying in a small Akçapınar Secondary School. The students at Akçapınar Secondary School were very enthusiastic about doing research, reading, and listening.
The Turkish teacher in their school was assigning them about social problems and using media. In one of such assignments, students conducted research on the unconscious use of pesticides on plants, soil, water, and human health. The students made their presentations to the class in consequence of their studies.
Their studies made them surprised because the economy of their region was based on agriculture and the families of the students were using these kinds of pesticides while manufacturing. In the discussion section at the end of the presentations, students talked with their teacher about points that bother them. After listening to them, their Turkish teacher offered to share these findings with their families to the students. This offer excited the students very much. The students talked with their school principal and mentioned they wanted to make a presentation about the harms of pesticides to their families at school. The school principal had the necessary arrangements and conveyed the wonderful news to students that they could make their presentations. "

The students who made their in the cafeteria of their school prepared an additional presentation to their families stating that it was necessary to switch to ecological culture. After this presentation, the hall fell silent. The data was transferred very appropriately and accurately. The students were also right about their demands; however, it seemed like it would take time for the procedures to get all these into their heads and take action.
They also knew that even a little of pesticides harm nature in the long run; however, from which organization would they get help and where would they apply to switch to ecological agriculture? Would they be able to provide credit and further information and support? Let’s say they took care of the production process, how would they ensure the marketing of organic products? What would they do if the products remained unsold as a result of all this knowledge, effort, and expense? As all these questions began to be raised slowly among the audience, the silence of the room gave way to discussions.
The research process of the students was quite long and laborious. Nevertheless, they were able to access accurate information thanks to their schools that supports the students. Students who learned to think critically while questioning the findings began to look at the world from different perspectives. How had a small school assignment turned into a project that could affect an entire village? Yes, everything started with a small question, but it was brought to life thanks to curious, investigative, and undeterred students.
