Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Kentucky. Lincoln was largely self-educated. He was an avid reader and had a lifelong interest in learning.
A wedding set for January 1, 1841, where he was supposed to marry, Mary Todd. It was canceled at Lincoln's request, but they later got married on November 4, 1842.
On November 6, 1860, Lincoln was elected the 16th president. The South was outraged by Lincoln's election, and on December 20, 1860, South Carolina took the lead by being the first to secede.
In June 1862, Congress passed an act banning slavery on all federal territory, which Lincoln signed. In July, the Confiscation Act of 1862 was enacted, providing court procedures to free the slaves of those convicted of aiding the rebellion
The Emancipation Proclamation, issued on September 22, 1862, gave freedom to slaves in 10 states not then under Union control. Lincoln spoke at the dedication of the Gettysburg battlefield cemetery on November 19, 1863.
The Confederate government evacuated Richmond and Lincoln visited the confederate capital. On April 9, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox, officially ending the war.
Lincoln ran for reelection in 1864, along with War Democrats Edwin M. Stanton and Andrew Johnson.
After attending an April 11, 1865 speech in which Lincoln promoted voting rights for blacks, Booth hatched a plot to assassinate the President. Lincoln had attended a play on the evening of April 14. At 10:15 in the evening, Booth crept up from behind, and fired at the back of Lincoln's head, mortally wounding him.
