Once upon a time,
Lived a homeless Floridian.
He was caught for breaking and entering,
His name was Clarence Earl Gideon.
Although Gideon wanted a lawyer,
He didn't have enough money,
And when he requested one from the court,
The judge denied it and looked at him funny!

Gideon defended himself in court,
But guilty was his verdict.
He was sentenced to 5 years in prison,
But filed a writ of habeus corpus.
This writ of habeus corpus tried to prove the justice system's wrongdoing,
But the Florida Supreme Court didnt believe it was worth pursuing.
Out of luck and down to his last resort,
Gideon's final option was to file a writ of certiorari to the Supreme Court.

Betts v. Brady was the case of previous precedent,
But Gideon knew that counsel was a part of his rights "self-evident".
Fortunately, Gideon's case was one the Supreme Court had picked,
because of debate on if the right to counsel was legal under Amendment Six.
The case was heard,
And the verdict was delivered:
Unanimous,
The precedent of Betts v. Brady was reversed and reconsidered!
Despite being just another average criminal,
Gideon courageously pursued a change in federal law.
Now the right to a lawyer,
Is obligatory for all.
The End.
