Hello everybody. My name is Gerald Ford. I was the 38th president and took office on August 9th, 1947. I was born in Omaha, Nebraska on July 14th, 1913 and launched my career in politics when I was elected in the US house of Representatives

I went to college also for economics and later studied law at Yale. Once I graduated, I went into WWII. I enlisted in the US Navy and served abord an aircraft carrier.

I've done some pretty awesome things in my time, but let me tell you about the time I changed the world.

The tension between the Soviet Union and the United States and their allies were not at a good spot.

So on August 1st, 1975, I, President Gerald R. Ford, signed the historic Helsinki Accords between the Soviet Union and the United States.

The accords were signed in Helsinki, Finland by 35 countries and called the conclusion of the CSCE (Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe)

The CSCE was an important element during the detente process during the Cold War.  It minimized political and military tensions between the East and West by improving human rights.

Detente was a time period during the Cold War that eased the tension between the Soviets and United States and created a better relationship between them. It did things like increase trade and cooperation with the Soviet Union.

The Helsinki Accords was a solution to lesson the tension between the Soviets Union and the United States and their allies. The accords covered a lot of different issues including territorial borders, cooperation between the countries and human rights.

Here is how it all started.

During Richard Nixon's presidency, he created a foreign policy towards the Soviet Union (detente) in order to lessen the tension between Russia and the United States. The policy has great success as Nixon and the Soviet Union discussed about the reduction of nuclear weapons.
