The Dome of Rock

The dome of the rock is a mosque, built at the site of the commemoration of the night journey of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his ascension to the sky.

It was built by the Umayyid Caliph Abd al-Malik in 691 AD and is located now in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The site's great significance for Muslims derives from the belief that Muhammad's night journey to heaven started from the rock at the centre of the structure.

The Israʾ and Miʿraj are the two parts of a Night Journey that the prophet Muhammad took during a single night. The journey is marked as one of the most celebrated dates in the Islamic calendar.

While he was resting in the Kaaba in Mecca, an angel came to him, with an animal called a Buraq. The Buraq carried Muhammad to a mosque that was far away, and then the Buraq took Muhammad up into heaven. While in Heaven, Muhammad met Adam and Moses and Allah (God), and then came back down to Earth.

Mosque of Cordoba

The Mosque of Cordoba is famous for the use of red and white voussoirs at the Mosque of Cordoba. It was built in Al Andalus, Spain in 784 CE

The mosque structure is regarded as an important monument in the history of Islamic architecture

Here is a diagram that shows us the Cordoba mosque. The stone placed at the very top centre of the arch is known as the keystone and anchors the entire arch support. The intermediate stones that are in between the keystone and the top
