There once were two young men named
Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet who lived
in France. Jacques Marquette was a priest who
could speak many different languages. Louis
Joliet was a fur trader who also made maps.
King Louis XIV chose the two men to take a
trip to America and find a river called 'The
Mississippi River.'
HINT: There is a little hidden monkey on each
page... see if you can find him.

On May 17, 1673, Jacques Marquette and Louis
Joliet set sail with five other men in
two canoes.
They paddled through different lakes and
rivers
in their canoes.
They went through a lake named Lake
Michigan,
and two rivers named Fox River and Wisconsin
River.

After a month at sea, the men finally found
theMississippi River!
Marquette and Joliet left the five men to
watch over their canoes as they walked on the
shore.
They walked to an Indian village near the
shore. The two men were welcomed and the
Indians gave them food.

When the two men were leaving the village, the
leader of the Indians gave them two gifts.
One was a 'camulet,' which was a stick that
meant peace for Indian tribes.
Another was the leader's 10-year-old son, to
help show the men where to go on their trip.
