Marie Salomea Skłodowska Curie, known as Marie Curie, is one of the most famous female scientists of the 20th century.
She was born 7th November 1867 in Warsaw, where she spent her childhood.

Her grandfather and father were teachers of mathematics and physics, and her mother was also a teacher.
When she was only ten years old, her sister died from the disease typhus, and two months later, her mother got sick and died from tuberculosis.

She was the youngest of five siblings.

It was very tough for her
Marie wanted to go to university, but in Poland it was not accepted that women studied. However, she found a famous university where women could attend in Paris, which she went to in 1891.

She obtained Licentiateships in Physics in 1893 and Mathematical Sciences in 1894.
In Paris she met Pierre Curie, who she married in 1895.

We investigated together, and in 1898 we discovered two new elements: radium and polonium.
In 1903, they won the Nobel Prize for Physics thanks to their discovery. So, Marie Curie became the first woman to win that prize.

In 1906 Pierre Curie died in a horse-carriage accident.

After Pierre's death, Marie Curie continued to investigate. Also, she became the first woman professor to teach at the Sorbonne. In 1911 she won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
The first person in history to win two Nobel Prizes!

Marie Curie died 4th July 1934 in Sallanches.
Her ashes are in the Pantheon of Paris.
