The pilgrims left Holland so that they could keep their English heritage. They went to Plymouth, England
where a trading company, the Plymouth Company,
was planning a journey to America.

I, King James I of England, give the Plymouth Company a royal charter to govern a new
colony in America!

The Plymouth Company's ship, the "Mayflower," set sail for America in August 1620. There were 100 people on the ship,
pilgrims and "strangers."

In November, after a 66 day long journey, they landed in Cape Cod. There was a large rock stationed
on the beach where they landed. They named this rock
Plymouth Rock.

Because they arrived in the winter, the pilgrims facedmany challenges. They could not grow crops in the hard
winter ground, so they had little food. Many people got sick
because they were cold and hungry.
I'm glad we made it to the new world safe and sound,but I wish it wasn't so cold and empty!

The ordinary people do not want to stay here with the pilgrims!
No fighting! Sign the Mayflower Compact.It is an agreement that all free men will choose a
governor to peacefully lead the settlement.
We must stick together to survive!

Before they planted their own crops, the pilgrims ate cornplanted by the native Americans. In late December,
the pilgrims began building huts.

In March, 1621, a native Indian from the Wampanouy tribe, named Samoset, entered the settlement. He started trade
between the settlers and the native Americans. Squanto, another
native American, was the interpreter and negotiator
with the Indian tribe's chief.

The settlers and the natives agreed to sign a treaty that said they would not fight. The peace lasted for 50 years.
