This story was created for a writing assignment in my creative writing class. So if i had to dedicate it to someone, it would be my writing teacher, Mrs. Pappas, and her teaching assistant, who looked over this assignment, Mrs. Cardon.
Thank you both for helping me create this short story. I had a blast!

I walked down the twisting trail. The tall trees seemed to reach out their branches as I passed by. Never had I ever seen a forest as dark and cold as this one, it was as if the light of day held no place here. The sound of snapping twigs echoed with every step I took.
The loud ‘CRACK!’ reminded me all too much of breaking bones. The icy wind nipped at my ears and bit at my nose, it engulfed my body in a wintery death trap.
"I have to get out of here...” My voice could barely be heard over the shrill cry of a bird flying overhead. It circled my location. Was there food nearby? Had something just up ahead died? Or... was it waiting for me to give up and die.
The farther into the forest I walked, the darker and creepier it became. Any sign of life that had once been there had vanished. Even the trees that had been green with leaves were now bone white and bare.
Their branches grabbed at my hair and latched onto my clothes. They hadn't moved, yet it was as if they were pulling at me, dragging me deeper into their depths.
The branches groaned and screamed every time I pulled myself free. They were dead... but seemed so alive.
"I'm scared, I must get out of here!"
“Tommy!” I yelled into the darkness.
“Tommy where are you! I want to leave!”
Did he not hear me? Was he too far away? Had he already left?
I no longer cared, I had to get out of there. With or without him.
I ran as fast as my trembling legs could carry me. I dodged trees and fallen logs, running back in the direction I had come from. Yet no matter how far I ran, there was no sign of an exit!
My heart hammered in my chest, and my lungs burned, screaming for air. I sat on a nearby rock to catch my breath. The events leading to my current situation replayed over and over in my head. The reason I was trapped in this death trap in the first place.
It all started. With a sleep over.

“Richard? Richard it's time to go!” My mom's soft voice called up to me from downstairs. “Richard! Hes waiting for you!” “Ok! I’m coming!” I raced down the stairs and into the kitchen, planting a light kiss on her cheek and saying goodbye. Then I was out the door and into the car waiting for me outside. I had just been invited to come and stay at Tommy’s house.
I had met Tommy at boys camp the previous summer. We hit it off instantly. He was a short and stubby boy with blue eyes and blonde hair, while I on the other hand was tall and had red hair with brown eyes. We were indeed an odd pair of friends, but we had one thing in common. The need for an adventure. So, when summer camp had ended, Tommy invited me over to his new house for a sleepover.
He and his family had just moved here from Boston, Texas. I greeted Tommy when I sat down, and we talked about all the things we had planned to do that night. After a lot of thought, we decided to visit the woods next to his house. He had told me stories about people going in and never coming out, I of course did not believe him. I did not believe in ghosts, that is all just superstition.
As we arrived at his house, I stared at it in awe. It was huge! I remember him once telling me that he felt like he was living in a castle, but I didn’t think he actually meant it! It was just like the castles you see in movies! They even had an old stone gargoyle sitting at the castle's entrance! Awesome!

“This is epic!” I grinned as we got out of the car. The second our feet touched the ground, we raced up the stairs and into the giant doors that awaited us.
“Last one There's a rotten egg!” I heard him shout from just behind me.
A rotten egg? Me? Never! I ran with all my might, and I could hear him just steps behind me. My feet touched the velvet red carpet of his room and I turned to face him, he did the same.
“Guess you’re the rotten egg!” I said.
“Me? Nuhuh! My toe touched it before you did!” He said back.
We stared at each other and burst out laughing.
“Fine, let's call it a tie.” I held my hand out to him.
He took my hand and gave it a firm shake.
“Deal.”
Throughout the day we did many things. He showed me all the many rooms in the house, there were a lot. The tour took so long by the time we were done, it was already time for lunch!
We headed to the kitchen and his mom served us some PB & J. It was Tommy's favorite. After lunch he took me to the top of the castle, you won't believe the number of stairs we had to climb up. When we finally reached the top and looked out the window, I could not believe my eyes.
Fields of flowers were as wide and as far as the eye could see! The trees of the forest looked like tiny shrubs from all the way up here!

Woah!” I gasped.
“Pretty cool right?” He grinned.
We spent the rest of the day wandering around and cracking jokes at each other. At around 7 pm, it began to get dark, and we packed up the stuff we would need to explore the woods.
“Goggles?”
“Check.”
“Flashlights?”
"Check.”
“Snacks?” I heard a crunch and shuffle behind me.
“Uh..Ya. Check”
“Ok! We’re ready to go!”
And with that we set off into the woods.

After an hour or so of walking, we came to a fork in the road. I wanted to go right, while Tommy wanted to go left. We decided to split ways and meet back here in 30 minutes.
“Remember! 30 minutes!” I called over my shoulder.
“Yeah, if you're not here, ill assume you got lost and won't ever come out!” He called back. We laughed at that, and parted ways.
Everything was going fine at first, the branches were kind of annoying though. I even saw a woodpecker pecking at something on the side of a tree. But nothing else really stood out. Crickets chirped in the grass as I passed by, and a flock of birds chatted overhead.
I walked deeper into the forest, and only after a few minutes did I realize there were no longer crickets chirping or birds chatting. It was silent.
“That's kind of... odd...” I said to myself.
