Our stories about
Bulgaria

Once upon a time there was a very beautiful trip to a very beautiful place in Gotse Delchev, Bulgaria. Strange name. Where does it come from? His name is historical. It belongs to an important Bulgarian hero and revolutionary of Macedonia and Thrace that now exists as a statue in the central square of the city.

The Municipal History Museum in Gotse Delchev

When we got there we visited a very beautiful museum. His building was reminiscent of another era. It had a Baroque style and was built in 1877 by Bulgarian teachers. We admired its wood-carved ceilings and its beautiful doors made by descendants of the Debar wood-carving school. We saw 12 showrooms. We learned that the museum has 2500 museum exhibits related to the culture of the Thracians, Slavs and Proto-Bulgarians. Most of them were discovered in the valley of the ancient river Nestos. In his yard there is a beautiful fountain.

There were many beautiful long, dark and elegant dresses worn by aristocratic ladies.

In another room we saw traditional crafts. Many women were waving and weaving wool. With a wooden loom they made colorful handmade textiles using various techniques. Which women sat in front of this loom. Maybe this grandmother on the wall.

Wow ... how much woven! Blankets, carpets, headboards, aprons, socks ... How many hours did some women spend to make them. A wide variety of varied patterns and designs. A feast of colors!

We also learned about Slavo-Bulgarian pottery. It was developed to serve the daily life of the area in the middle of the 19th century. Provide the population with the necessary vessels. Dishes, jars and storage containers.

Precious women's ornaments that women wore over their traditional costumes. Coins and belts of so many years all made of silver.

This is a font that their children baptized. We were impressed because in Greece the font is bigger because the baby comes in all the time.

This is a tool called a blower used to make bells for for cows, sheep, goats.

We were impressed by the many bells. This collection is collectible and costs over 10000 euros.

We saw the famous silver tetradrachms minted on the islands of Thassos and Tenedos.

We arrived at the room with the old bronze and silver-plated household utensils. Trays, plates, pots, oil cans ... How different from today's tableware. Many of them were made by ganotzides, It was a vital profession as they often saved people from certain death, caused by the utensils. Most cooking utensils were made of copper (bakirenia). With time and a lot of use they rusted and became dangerous. That's why they had to be glazed, that is, to cover their surface with a layer of tin (also known as tin).

A unique Bulgarian national tradition
The hand knitted socks of Banichan

After the museum we traveled to a very beautiful village near Gotse Delchev, The village was called Banichan. Banitsan is the only village that has five churches, two thermal springs, two rivers and special women's traditional clothing. The inhabitants of this village appreciate the values of life and the magic of their natural and cultural heritage. There the locals welcomed us wearing traditional costumes and holding on the tray a delicious local pie that had the name of the village. We cut a piece and dipped it in honey. A unique Bulgarian national tradition has survived for many centuries in this small village: hand-knitted woolen socks with beautiful patterns. It is not a simple ordinary handmade knitting from natural wool. Through this vibrant combination of colors and decorations we get information about the daily life and perceptions of Bulgarians from the past, their Christian beliefs, family, morals and human relations.

Even today, people still believe that if you give a sock to a loved one, you give him a blessing, warmth, a symbol of the hearth.

There are nine designs, each with its own name. The colors used for the unique patterns are: white, red, green, blue and yellow - they are important for preventing evil. Some of the oldest Bulgarian motifs are preserved in the knitted socks of the inhabitants of Banichan and this huge wealth of colors and patterns can not be found anywhere else in Bulgaria. We learned that it is a prayer to all natural forces to help the sock owner be healthy, prosperous and long-lived. These socks travel all over the world. They are sold in more than 25 countries on 5 continents and in 2018 they reached the British Royal Court as a gift for the wedding of Harry and Megan. Two months later, the creators received a card of gratitude from Queen Elizabeth II.

Then we tried on their beautiful costumes. I'm so excited about it. The lady who helped me told me that the clothes go from mom to daughter. They are preserved through the passage of many years...

And of course our teachers wore the beautiful costumes...

Experieta ERASMUS in Bulgaria.
ERASMUS experience in Bulgaria.
Gotse Delchev are locuri frumoase de vizitat.

Vitturi Castle was built by the aristocratic family Vitturi from Trogir, at the end of the 15th century in order to provide protection not only for the Vitturi family but also for the population of the nearby village. The castle was built in the style of a luxurious renaissance palace. Now it has become the cultural centre of Kaštel Lukšić, as a place where numerous exhibitions, concerts and plays are held.
The legend of Miljenko and Dobrila is a tragic story about two lovers from Kaštel Lukšić, who are often described as the Croatian Romeo and Juliet.

Philippi (/fɪˈlɪpaɪ, ˈfɪləˌpaɪ/; Greek: Φίλιπποι, Philippoi)
We have had the pleasure to visit Philippi, a famous archaeological site, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 because of its exceptional Roman architecture, its urban layout as a smaller reflection of Rome itself, and its importance in early Christianity. Its original name was Crenides (Greek: Κρηνῖδες, Krenides "Fountains") after its establishment by Thasian colonists in 360/359 BC. The city was renamed by Philip II of Macedon in 356 BC and abandoned in the 14th century after the Ottoman conquest.
Founded in 356 BC by the Macedonian King Philip II, the city developed as a “small Rome” following the Battle of Philippi, in 42 BC. The vibrant Hellenistic city, of which the walls and their gates, the theatre and temple are to be seen, was supplemented with Forum and a monumental terrace with temples. Later the city became a centre of the Christian faith following the visit of the Apostle Paul in 49-50 CE.

Thasian colonists established a settlement at Krenides in Thrace in 360/359 BC near the head of the Aegean Sea at the foot of Mt. Orbelos, now called Mt. Lekani, about 13 km (8.1 mi) north-west of Kavalla, on the northern border of the marsh that, in antiquity, covered the entire plain separating it from the Pangaion Hills to the south. In 356 BC, King Philip II of Macedon conquered the city and renamed it to Philippi.

Wish we could come again. Thank you Greece!

The boat of wishes

The Aggitis cave (also called Maaras Cave), located NE of the capital, close to Prosotsani, on the south foot of Falakro mountain where the freezing Aggitis river springs from the depths of the mountain. It is the largest in length and volume cave in Greece and it is a river cave, the only one existing in Greece! The cave is an elongated natural pipe which is almost the only draining path for the waters collected in the closed basin of Kato Nevrokopi.
A great chamber was discovered reaching 500 m length. Its roof is full of stalactites, some of which have a diameter of 2m. and touch the surface of the water. Their colours are amazing, due to the existence of minerals such as manganese, iron, copper etc. Nowadays, 8.5 km have been explored and only 2.5 are accessible to visitors. You can enter the cave from the artificial entrance that has been opened and walk for 500 m. Stalactites of various forms, sizes and colors decorate the cave. As for stalagmites, their number is very limited because of the continuous flow of the river.
Philippi was a major Greek city northwest of the nearby island, Thasos. Its original name was Crenides after its establishment by Thasian colonists in 360/359 BC. The city was renamed by Philip II of Macedon in 356 BC and abandoned in the 14th century after the Ottoman conquest. The present village of Filippoi is located near the ruins of the ancient city and is part of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace in Kavala, Greece. The archaeological site was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 because of its exceptional Roman architecture, its urban layout as a smaller reflection of Rome itself, and its importance in early Christianity.

KAVALA Kavala is a city in northern Greece, the principal seaport of eastern Macedonia and the capital of Kavala regional unit.
It is situated on the Bay of Kavala, across from the island of Thasos and on the Egnatia motorway, a one-and-a-half-hour drive to Thessaloniki (160 kilometres ) and a forty-minute drive to Drama.
Kavala is an important economic centre of Greece, a center of commerce, tourism, fishing and oil-related activities and formerly a thriving trade in tobacco.
From the 5th century BC onward, the city of Kavala was surrounded by a defensive wall. A major modification took place in 1307 during the reign of Andronicos II Palaeologos, when the long walls from the sea to the top of the hill were built.
The Byzantine castle was completely destroyed in 1391 when the Turks captured the city. The castle was rebuilt by the Ottomans in 1425, and what we see today is mostly the result of that reconstruction.
The Kavala aqueduct, popularly known as the Kamares, is a well-preserved structure in the city of Kavala and is understandably one of the city’s landmarks. While the aqueduct is considered to most likely be of Roman origin, the present structure dates to the sixteenth century.

Doina Music
We had the pleasure to meet Mr Stephan Popescu and listen to his incredible doina music performance.

The doina is a free-rhythm, highly ornamented improvisational tune.

The improvisation is done on a more or less fixed pattern by stretching the notes in a rubato-like manner, according to the performer's mood and imagination.
We also listened to the traditional Romanian folk songs beautifully sung by his fellow musicians.

The hosts showed us the wealth of their traditional songs and dances.
Domaćini su nam pokazali svo bogatstvo svojih tradicionalnih pjesama i plesova.

So we enjoyed the music while decorating little plates with traditional Romanian motifs.
