"BE WHO YOU ARE.
NOT WHAT THE
WORLD WANTS YOU TO BE"

Remi's
Red
Rainboots
Eight-year-old Remi is about to start second grade at a brand-new school. As much as she loved her old school, she was excited about change – a new neighborhood, new friends, and new teachers. A chance to start brand new was exhilarating. Growing up, Remi had two wonderful parents who always encouraged her to be her most authentic self. Remi’s favorite way to express herself was through her clothing choices. Specifically with her red rainboots. Her rainboots made her feel safe. As her first day approached, it was no surprise that she would wear her bright red rainboots.

Remi’s exciting first day of school quickly sour when a group of girls teased her for wearing her rainboots during recess. The girls laughed at her and made snarky remarks like “you look like a circus clown with those big red boots” and “someone call the fashion police”. These comments made Remi upset, to the verge of tears.
Mia, the ringleader of the girl group notices.
“Oh, are you going to cry now?”
Which Remi responds teary eyed “n-n-no”
“Chill out. It’s just a joke” Mia says.
This interaction left a mark on Remi. The next day she showed up without her red rainboots. Remi’s rainboots were a part of who she was. When she didn’t have them on, she didn’t feel like truest self. Her teacher, Miss Fletcher, quickly came to realize the change in Remi.
