This is a children's story book about the Supreme Court case: Schenck vs United States (1919)

Once upon a time there was a big war across the entire world. It was called World War One.





In Order to have enough people to fight in the war, the government began selecting people to go fight

This made some people unhappy and they protested. They believed that they were allowed to do this because of freedom of speech.


This is Charles and Elizabeth. They said that the war was bad and that drafting people was like slavery.


They were arrested and the government said that they were violating the espionage Act. They were accused of attempting to cause insubordination and obstructing recruitment






Charles and Elizabeth were told that they were wrong and could not protest...
... But they kept saying they were right, so the supreme court decided for them.



The supreme court said that becuase the country was at war and because they were presenting a "clear and present" danger, the government should be sided with
