Devin: Good morning, I’m Devin Veda Farandy welcome to the “ABC News” bringing you the eye on the news for Friday, 18th November 2021.

Todays news is regarding the new policies required to be a permanent resident for foreign partners of existing residents to have enrolled for at least 500 hours in an English course provided by the government before gaining a permanent visa. English proficiency is currently a requirement for some other work and study visas. Anyone applying for Australian citizenship must also enroll in a 500 hours English course. If approved by parliament, the controversial immigration requirement will be instated from mid-2021.

Here is what the Minister of Immigration, Mr. Alan Tudge has to say.

Alan Tudge: Good afternoon every body, I am Alan Tudge Minister of Administration of Australia.

I will announce a new regulation regarding the requirements to become a permanent residence in Australia

"We will ask applicants to achive functional english proficiency standards or at least make an effort to learn English. One of the efforts we meant is to undergo around 500 hours of English courses provided by the government"

The requirement is to create "social cohesion" or social assimilation.

Because with the ability to speak functional English participants can easily socialize with local residents or go directly into the community so that the relationships that occur between the two communities will remain close, united, and well integrated
