Once upon a time, in a land not long ago, there lived a boy named
Otto. He was in sixth grade, and all of his friends liked to read. They read
mostly chapter books, and their favorites were fairy tales. But, he very much
disliked books. He thought that they were useless and a waste of time.

Instead of reading, he preferred to play outside with his friends. They
would play by their school building, bouncing ball's off the brick wall. He
liked to play games like baseball, basketball, and riding his bike.

He would always get books from his friends, to encourage him to read.
But, they would end up in the recycling. But, one day, while he was throwing
away books from his birthday, one bounced off the bin and landed on the
floor; open. The book started to glow, and Otto stepped back, confused.
He then reached forward to grab the book, but instead, he fell in!

When Otto woke up, he was on a pirate ship, dressed like a pirate, and
surrounded by other pirates! They were all sitting in a cabin of a boat, telling
stories about dragons, mermaids, and giants! "Excuse me", said Otto.
"How did I get here?" All four pirates looked over at him."You must be a
stowaway,"said the girl. "Lookin' for a little adventure, eh? Welcome aboard!
My name's Clair, and this is Rufus, Jack, and Ben. Come sit with us!"

They gave Otto some bread and water, and got back to telling stories.
"The giant then escaped the dragon by sailing off to sea to live on an
island with the mermaids. The End." Said Jack. Everyone laughed.
"Enough of our stories," said Rufus. " Otto, how 'bout you tell us a
story."

"Me?" Said Otto. "Um...I dunno. I've never read an adventure book."
"It doesn't have to be about an adventure. Tell us about any book you've
read." Said Jack."I can't," said Otto. "I don't like to read. Its not fun."
Otto wasn't happy that his new friends were telling stories from books.
"I like your stories," he said. "But I don't like books."

"Look," said Rufus. He and Ben stood up, and pushed the treasure box to
the center of the room. They opened it, and inside were books. Jack handed
Otto a book, and opened to a page . "Here," he said,"Is where we read about
stores. Then, we tell our favorites to the group. The giant story I just told; I
found in the blue book on the ground. These books are our treasure."

"Well, its time for bed," Said Rufus."Lets clean up." Everyone started to put
away the books, and get ready for bed. Otto saw a book in the middle, and
went to put it away. Instead, when he reached to pick it up, he fell into it again.

When Otto woke up, he was on a beach, with mermaids. "Hello," said the
mermaid on the beach."My name's Destiny. Out in the water is Sophie and
Matt. They are doing research." "On what?" Asked Otto."They are
researching fish. Want to go see?" Asked Destiny, already jumping into the
water."I can't breathe underwater, though." Otto said, sadly. "Don't worry!"
Destiny said, swimming underwater. Otto then jumped in after her.

To his surprise, Otto sunk to the bottom, breathing. "WOW!" Said Otto,
looking at all the fish. "What are they studying, and why do they have books?"
Asked Otto, amazed by all the fish. "They are researching those red and yellow
fish. They want to know more about why they swim in packs. The journals
that they holding have valuable information. That's where they keep all the
information about all fish under the sea. Lets go back up and let them work."

"So, what do you think?"Asked Destiny. "I think its really cool! How they
collect information about fish, and keep it documented! Is that why they used
the books, to write everything down?" Asked Otto. "Yes, they use books to
keep track of all the information they find. Books are very useful to them.
They are like treasure!" Said Destiny, pleased at Otto's interest. "Hey, whats
that?" She said, pointing at an object buried in the sand. "I think its a book."

When he woke up, this time, he was on a stage. "No, eat the apple!" Cried a
blond girl, to his right. "What? Are you ok?" Asked Otto, concerned. "I said,'No,
eat the apple!'" There was a long silence before she said "You need to learn your
lines!" She tossed Otto a book, that read 'Snow White'. She then took a bite of
the apple, and walked off stage. Otto opened the book, to find a script for a play.
The first line he read said, Book's are useful in many different ways. Whether
they are used to find good stories to tell friends, keep track of research, or to
help you remember your lines. You just have to find a way that they are useful
to you.' When he finished reading, he got sucked up into the book, one last time.
