INTRO
My name is Lauren Dunn. Some people think
that girls and women can't travel West
because it's too dangerous and we could be
hurt or even killed. Some also think we aren't
strong enough. I say where's the danger; I'll
take it down. I am determined to expand our
country and help the future of this beautiful
continent. I live in Antone, Delaware and I live
with my husband, Bill, and our son, Thomas who
just turned 2. I will be traveling alone without the
support and love of my family. It may be depressing
and nerve wracking at times but I will do my best to
remain strong and keep a positive
attitude.
O' Sullivan's
Article
This morning in the paper I read an article by a man
named John O' Sullivan. O' Sullivan stated in his
article it was "America's Manifest Destiny to
overspread and to possess the whole of the
continent." Finally someone who agrees with me! I
have been trying to tell people for about 3 years that
we should explore the land beyond the Rockies but no
one listened! I have decided to embark on a journey to
the land unknown and see what lay beyond the Rocky
Mountains. I will set out as soon as I can. Yes, there
may be dangers and troubles that one would never
think of but I have to try in sake of the future of this
country. I will bring a knapsack full of provisions and my
diary but nothing else besides courage, bravery, and
willingness to explore. Wish me luck!
The Annexation of
Texas
I heard today from rumors around town
that we have finally taken over the Alamo.
I'm so ecstatic! I am so proud of our
country! This is the first step in expanding
the territory of our country. I am proud that
our leaders have taken the initiative in
expanding our territory as a country and
thought about the future of our country.
This action of taking over the Alamo and
Texas was definitely a great start for our
country. We need to have the courage and
will power to push through our doubts and
take chances in exploring the unexplored
land out west.
I hope that when I embark on my journey,
I will be able to help expand our territory
and help our country. I will risk life and
limb for the chance to help our country. My
husband isn't happy about the annexation
of the Alamo. He thinks we should have used
diplomacy and earned it peacefully I agree
with him to some extent but I honestly don't
care how we earn it, as long as it is under our
possession.
Oregon Fever:
What it is and why
it's so catchy...
It is really important we travel West. We have
been really subsided and are too nervous to
risk the lives of our citizens. I'm really excited
to explore and be one of the first to see what lay
over the Rockies. I have what most are saying is
the "Oregon Fever." It isn't a real sickness. It's
hearing all the great things that lay over the
Rockies, such as the warm climate, new fruits and
vegetables, and different species of animals. I got
Oregon Fever from hearing of the travels of Lewis and
Clark. These men were some of the first to reach the
Pacific Ocean. They are my role models and the idea of
being one of the first women to reach the Pacific Ocean
excites me. Oregon Fever is extremely catchy for all the
citizens of the west.
Everyone I have been talking to
is excited to travel and witness new things.
Once I reach the Ocean, I will turn around
and bring my family and we will continue
the family business, Dunn's Bakery, in the
East. Once I tell my family of the luxuries
over the Rockies, I know they too will have
Oregon Fever and will be excited to join me.
