In dedication to my younger self

There was a little girl called Nina who was 8 years old. She had very large curly hair and always styled it in varied hairstyles. All of her friends have pin-straight hair, so they weren’t very familiar with her type of hair, and they were always surprised with what she was able to do with her hair.

One day she decided not to style her hair and come to school with it in an afro.

When she arrived, she saw her friends Jane and Mary and went to say hi to them.
As she was walking toward them a girl stopped her.

“Hi, I’m Tina”
“ I just wanted to say that I love your hair and I think that you should leave your hair out like this more.”
“Hi Tina, I’m Nina”
“Thank you Tina, I have to go so see you around”

Her friends walked up to her and she saw that they were both looking at her weird.

“Did you not have time to fix your hair this morning?” Jane said.
“ Yeah It looks like a mess” Mary added.
“No I just didn’t want to style my hair and I like how it looks” Tina responded.
Jane and Mary started laughing at her as they walked away from her. She went to the bathroom feeling sad and she tied her hair up and went to class.

It was suddenly break time and she didn’t know where to go sit because she didn’t want to go back to those girls.
She went to the playground, and she spotted Tina who had waved her over.

Tina was sitting with a boy called Byron, Nina knew Byron already because they were in the same class but she has never spoken to him before.
Tina introduced Nina to Byron and they all ate lunch together.
“Hey Nina, do you want to sit with us?”
“Yeah gladly”
While they were eating and talking Tina suddenly asked.

“Why did you tie your hair up?”
“Mary and Jane said it looked really messy, so I just tied it up.”
“Yeah it looked really nice this morning”

“They said that? They have pin-straight hair they don’t understand the struggle”
“ I don’t think that you should listen to them”
“I guess you guys are right”
