![](https://images2-cdn.storyjumper.net/transcoder.png?id=2294be971&width=523&height=380)
It was the summer 1963 and Carl and I had been
planning for months. We knew the chest was buried
near an oak tree, a live oak. There was only one near
the creek and it was huge with limbs reaching the
ground. It had to be the one. My dad had told me it
was over 200 years old.
We packed our lunch, Carl hid the shovel near the
shed and we told Mom we were heading to the
playground. As soon as she left for the post office we
ran to the woods stopping only to pick up the shovel.
No one saw us...or so we thought.

We ran through the woods and finally arrived
at the narrow crossing of Southeast Creek.
The sky was darkening and a storm was
brewing. I was frightened and I thought I
heard sounds behind us in the woods.
Carl had explored here last summer and
decided to follow the creek heading west. We
were heading into an unknown area. Carl
carried the shovel but I decided to leave our
lunch here for our return. I needed all my
strength to carry the treasure chest.

As we walked the sky brightened and I knew the
storm had passed us by. I still heard the noises in
the woods behind us but carl was not concerned.
We rounded a turn and came upon a small cabin
the the woods. Behind the cabin was a large tree.
It was an oak, a live oak. We had found the tree,
the clue to finding the treasure!
All of a sudden we both heard the sounds of
someone crashing through the underbrush of the
forest.
"What are you doing here bellowed," the old man?

A man, a man with a red beard and a bird on
his shoulder stepped out of the woods. He was
dressed like the men of our town but he had
an old look about him as if he came from a
different time. He eyed the shovel and smiled.
"Looking for the buried treasure I see," he
sneared.
We looked nervously at each other and shook
our heads. Neither of us spoke.
"Okay Mates, then let's get to it. It's been
hidden too long." growled the old man

We all headed to the tree and walked the 10 paces
from the trunk in a westerly direction. Carl began
digging while the old man went for more shovels. It
took us no time before we hear the sound of metal
hitting metal. We had found the chest. We
frantically threw the final shovelfuls of dirt and pulled
the heavy chest out of the ground.
We opened the chest and saw the gold, the coins and
the jewels shining in the sunlight. We danced around
the chest, laughed and shouted before we noticed we
were alone in the woods. The old man was gone.
The house was empty except for a picnic basket, our
picnic basket.
