Swish! There it goes, hit hard and far
that ball is gone!
What I'm I talking about, well softball of
course. Softball is like baseball only it is
played on a smaller field and with a larger
ball. There are two teams needed to play
and each team has nine players.
What a great game this is! But there are
some things that you need to know before
you can play.

The Field
In softball the field is divided. It is first divided
into foul and fair territory. Any ball that lands
in fair territory is considered in play. Any ball
that lands in foul territory is out of play and
the hitter can get another chance at the plate.

The field is also divided into the outfield and
infield. In the outfield you have three
positions, the right fielder, the left fielder and
the center fielder. In the infield there is home
plate, first base, second base, third base,
shortstop and the pitchers mound.

The Equipment
The game of softball requires its players to
have certain equipment. It's important to be
protected so that players don't get hurt.
Players need a bat in order to hit the ball. The
bats can be made out of wood, aluminum or
other composite material such as carbon fiber.
Bats can be different sizes in length but no
longer than 34 in.
All the players use fielding gloves, made from
leather. Gloves have webbing between the
thumb and forefinger, known as the "pocket"

All the teams have their own unique uniforms.
The uniform includes a cap or visor, a shirt
(usually sleeveless), tight sliding undershorts,
socks, and pants. On the back of all the
uniforms players have numbers from 0-99.
Also part of the equipment are cleats or
spikes which are the shoes and a helmet. The
helmet is worn by the batter. Of course the
most important one is the ball. The ball is not
soft but hard, and bigger than a baseball.
Often it is a neon green color

Gameplay
A game of softball lasts about 7 innings. In
each inning there are six outs. The first half of
the inning the visiting team gets to bat, the
minimum number of players that get to bat is
three. However if three outs are not made
after three hitters the team keeps sending
hitters to the plate until three outs are made.

Outs are made by getting three strikes or
hitting the ball to any of the position players
and getting tagged out or the fielder touching
the base before the hitter gets to it. Its
important to run fast!
Runs are scored by going around the bases
and getting back to home plate. The team with
the most runs at the end of the game wins.

Softball is a very popular sport in the United
States and many other countries around the
world. This is a great way to meet great
people and make new friends. This is my
favorite sport.
