Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, who later took the pseudonym Douglas, was an American writer, publicist, fighter for the rights of the black population, was born a slave. When Frederick grew up, he was assigned as a servant to the grandson of the owner. The white boy learned to read and told his little servant what he had learned at school. It was forbidden to teach blacks to read and write. Frederick secretly picked up discarded school books. He invented games in which you had to write and count, and eagerly looked at how white children do it.

At the age of twelve, he could already freely read everything that came into his hands. The young man climbed into the forest and only here opened the hidden book.

One day the owner found him in the forest. Frederick was so absorbed in reading that he did not hear the call. The lash made him jump up.

For several months the young man lived with the "traveler" of slaves. He walked around in dirty rags. From these days, deep scars remained on his back for the rest of his life - traces of a whip. But Frederick was not broken. One day he attacked his overseer.

A few years later, the grown-up Frederick managed, risking his life, to get from the slave-owning South to the northern states, where slavery was prohibited. He became a day laborer, took on any business. He worked as a chimney sweep, sawed wood, was a coachman.

One day, a magazine with a significant headline fell into his hands - "Liberator" ("Liberator"). The pages of the magazine exposed the slave owners and sharply condemned the system of slavery.

The journalist Garrison chose the struggle for the liberation of slaves as the goal of his life. And Harrison heard. A popular anti-slavery movement arose in the country. It was attended by blacks, white farmers, workers, intellectuals. Supporters of the immediate abolition of slavery were called abolitionists. Frederick joined them.
