Bob's farm is in great danger:
A story about awakening ecological consciousness and promoting collective action
Once upon a time, there was a farmer named Bob. He lived in a village in the countryside and he had a big farm with animals and crops. It is spring and the weather is good, so Bob goes to the farm to plant the seeds.
After a month, the seeds didn’t grow. Bob was really sad and upset. He had planted 300 turnips. What had happened? Maybe the water he used for the plants was polluted because it was green and it smelt awful.
Bob was very sad and disappointed. He went back home and started thinking of possible solutions. He then decided to call the plants’ doctor, the agriculturalist, to find out what had happened to his seeds.
The agriculturalist came immediately tο Bob’s farm and carefully observed the soil and the seeds. He suggested that Bob should examine the water with which he irrigated the seeds. He was using the water from a small river nearby.
Bob took a sample of water from the river to the chemical laboratory in order to be analyzed. The results came out after a few days. The water was polluted and inappropriate for use.
Those who drank from this water were in danger of becoming seriously ill, humans, animals, trees, plants.
Bob was wondering what might have caused the pollution. Maybe people were throwing garbage, or factory waste…. What could he do about that?
Bob realized that he needed to take action to address the pollution of the river. He decided to talk to his neighbors and raise awareness about the issue. Bob organized a community meeting and invited local environmental experts to talk about
the impact of water pollution on the ecosystem. The experts suggested that they could start a campaign to clean up the river and prevent further pollution.
Together with his neighbors, Bob formed a volunteer group to clean up the river.
They started by removing the garbage and waste that had accumulated along the riverbanks.
They also contacted the authorities to report the illegal dumping of factory waste into the river.
The authorities started an investigation about the illegal wastes of factories.
They examined the river and tried to find out whether the wastes were causing damage to the health of people and animals and fertility of soil or not. The results showed that some of them were really awful so few of the factories were punished and closed.
Bob and the volunteers also tried to do their best for their village. Thanks to their efforts, many people saved their lives. Bob was happy about his farm and animals. However, he believed that it was the beginning of the future life and there were many things to continue for a better one.
Bob thought that our planet could be saved by the women and men of the future: the children. From that day he went to the schools to tell his story and to explain to the children the rules to respect our planet: the most important is recycling.
Recycling saves energy and water, lowers pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, improves air and water quality, preserves landfill space and conserves natural resources Bob was now sowing the most important seeds, those of environmental education.
