Athens has been the capital of Greece since 1834 and it’s the largest city. It is one of the oldest cities in the world with its history reaching as far as 3.200 BC. During the classical era it was the centre of arts, knowledge and philosophy. Democracy was born in Athens. Among its most important attractions are the Acropolis and the Parthenon.

Hephaestus was a god of fire and metals. He was lame, because once Zeus got angry and threw him from the top of Mount Olympus to Lemnos, so he hurt his leg.

Dimitra was the goddess of agriculture . She taught people to cultivate land. She protected the trees and all the plants of the world.

Hestia was the goddess of the house . She protected households, that’s why in all houses there was a small altar of hers, the hearth.

Artemis was the goddess of hunting and sister of Apollo. All day she roamed the forests with her bow and arrows . She protected the forests and all wild animals that lived there.

Aphrodite was the goddess of beauty. She was born from the sea foam. She was the mother of the god Eros.

Apollo was the god of music , divination and light . He was born together with his sister Artemis.

Hermes was the postman of the gods. He wore winged sandals , which carried him over land and sea , to carry the orders of Zeus. He was also the god of commerce.

THE WHITE TOWER
The White Tower of Thessaloniki is a 15th century Ottoman fortification project. The current form of the tower replaced a Byzantine fortification of the 12th century. Today it functions as a museum and is one of the most famous buildings-symbols of cities in Greece. It has 6 floors, 70 meters perimeter and it is 34 meters high. The White Tower overlooks the waterfront of Thessaloniki.

The Parthenon is a temple built to honour the goddess Athena, protector of the city of Athens. It was the result of the collaboration of important architects and sculptors in the middle of the 5th BC. century. The architects of the Parthenon were Iktinos and Kallikrates.

The ancient city of Philippi was originally (360 BC) a colony of the Thasians, named Krinides, but soon it was conquered by the then powerful Philip II, king of Macedonia, who fortified the city and gave it his name. In the Hellenistic years, the city acquired its wall, the theater, public buildings and private residences.
