English 3/4 Honors

It was a gloomy day. Anna was sad and because she was always so bored. She got in trouble because she did not want to do her homework. She also did not want to talk to her mom, help out with chores, or take care of her sister. Angrily, Anna ran outside of her house. She kicked the stones in front of her making them fly. (Exposition) 

The next thing she knew, she hurt her toe from kicking the stones. She then saw that one of the stones that she kicked hurt a bird. Anna had never hurt an animal before. She was scared, but she left it alone. She was so angry that she did not care for the bird. (Conflict Introduced) 

After walking for a while, Anna met a small girl trying to get an apple from a tree. Because she was smaller, the girl could not reach the apple no matter how much she tried. Even though Anna knew she could help her easily, she also left her alone and walked away. (Rising Action)

Well...

All of a sudden, Anna heard a noise.

 “Chirp, chirp!” whistled a bird. The girl looked around. Out of the tree, a little bird showed itself. 

“Why didn’t you help her?” asked the bird. Anna stared at the bird, surprised, and didn't know what to say. 

“You can talk?” she asked. 

“Yes! Do you want me to tell you a story?” asked the bird. Anna nodded, curious as to what the bird would say. 

“Well…” started the bird. 

"This story starts with God. God is someone who you cannot see or touch, and he lives outside of this world. But God sent his son to come to earth and to be with people ("What is Christianity"). His son's name is Jesus. Jesus loved and cared for all people around him. He did many things to heal the sick and taught people that they should love others. ("Christianity"). Because whoever Jesus healed became happy, people wanted to do good to others and tell them about Jesus too (Tweeddale). The people who want to be like Jesus are called Christians.

“Wow, I want to be like him!” exclaimed Anna. Suddenly, she remembered that she had left the girl trying to get the apple from the tree. “I need to help her!” thought Anna. She found the girl still next to the apple tree who had given up trying to get an apple. Quickly, Anna took an apple from the tree and gave it to the girl.  

“Thanks!” cried the little girl. 

“You're welcome! What’s your name?” said Anna. 

“I’m Sandy!” answered the girl. 

 “Tweet! Tweet!” chirped the bird. “Once upon a time, people told each other that they had a special connection with animals or plants (“Totemism”). A special connection means that an animal or plant has an important meaning to a person or a group of people (“Totemism”). This is why they do everything to protect the animal that they chose. Their chosen animal is a big part of their lives and means a lot to them. A group of people who choose a special animal will never kill them or do anything bad to the animal (Koto). What these people are doing is a big part of what is called Totemism!" 

Sandy and Anna looked at each other. They also wanted to choose an animal that they could care for and protect. They wanted an animal to be a big part of their lives. 

“Oh!” Anna exclaimed. She remembered that she hurt a bird and left it alone. Anna and Sandy quickly ran to find the hurt bird and helped it with its wound. They decided that they would take care of the sick bird and never hurt any animal.
