This is Alice, Daisy, Rosie, and Ruthie. Rosie
and Ruthie are twins, but all four of the girls
are best friends. Every Wednesday at 4
o’clock, they go to ballet class with Miss
Blair.
In February, they began working on their
class dance for the spring recital. One month
later, in March, Miss Blair decided to hold
auditions for a small solo part. She taught
the class a small combination for auditions
next week.
Daisy and Rosie are the two best dancers in the class,
but Daisy often felt that Rosie was much better than
she was. Daisy really wanted the solo, but she didn’t
think she would get it. Her mom often had to work,
too, so Daisy thought that if she could get the solo, her
mom might be able to come to the show. So she made
a plan.
Rosie and Ruthie had just gotten new ballet shoes, but Daisy knew
that Rosie still carried the old ones in her bag, for good luck. Daisy
thought that if she wore the old shoes, she might be as good of a
dancer as Rosie was. So, before class, when Rosie was practicing,
Daisy sneaked into the dressing room and took the shoes from
Rosie’s bag.
Daisy did not notice that Ruthie and Alice were still in
the dressing room. When Daisy left to practice some
more, the two were shocked by what Daisy had done.
Ruthie was angry at Daisy, but Alice thought that
maybe Daisy had a reason for what she’d done.
“Mr. Bear says we have to tell Miss Blair!” cried
Ruthie. “Because if she finds out that Daisy stole my
sister’s ballet shoes and then finds out that we knew
about it, we’ll all get in trouble!”
“But what if she was just borrowing the shoes?” asked
Alice. “Hers are kind of worn out. I think we should ask her
about it first. We should not get her in trouble if she was just
borrowing them.”
Ruthie thought about this and agreed.
“Okay,” Ruthie said, though she was unsure if it was
the right thing to do. “But if she did steal them and won’t
give them back, we have to tell Miss Blair.”
A few minutes later, class started and Miss Blair
led everyone in a warm up. After that, she asked
if anyone wanted to try out for the solo. Five of
the fifteen girls raised their hands, including
Daisy and Rosie.
Daisy went first, and she performed without any
mistakes. She beamed, knowing she had done well,
and thought that the shoes had helped her. Rosie
went next, and Daisy sat with Alice and Ruthie.
“Did you steal Rosie’s shoes?” asked Alice.
“I just wanted to dance like Rosie, and I thought her shoes
might help,” Daisy said, looking away. “I’m sorry.”
Alice and Ruthie felt bad for Daisy, even though she had
done something wrong. They told her to return the shoes and
apologize to Rosie. Daisy knew what she had done was
wrong, and said that she would return them right after class.
After everyone had auditioned, Miss Blair announced
who would be the soloist. She told the class that it was a
hard decision, but that the solo would instead be a duet
with Daisy and Rosie. The girls ran to the front of the room
to thank Miss Blair for choosing them.
“You both earned it,” Miss Blair said with a smile, and
Daisy felt bad about what she’d done again, knowing she
could have performed well with her own ballet shoes.
Class ended soon after, and Daisy took off the shoes and
walked up to Rosie.
“Rosie, I borrowed- I mean- stole your shoes before
class. I’m sorry," Daisy told her.
Rosie was hurt that one of her best friends had done this
to her.
“Why did you do that?” Rosie asked, tears in her eyes,
and Daisy felt bad again.
