Tectonic plates- Plates 

sectioned of Earth's crust and 

mantle that move across the 

Earth as stated in "The Theory 

of Plate tectonics."

Abraham Wegner- A german 

scientist who created the 

theory of Continental Drift.

Pangaea- A large land 

mass that was 

composed of all the 

continents joined 

together.

The Theory of Plate Tectonics- A 

more complete picture that 

includes all of the evidence that 

lead to the idea that the continents 

have moved, and are still moving. 

Continental Drift- States that 

the Earth's continents were 

once joined in a single large 

landmass that broke apart, and 

that the continents have drifted 

apart to their current locations.

Crust- Outermost, 

rocky layer of Earth, 

which is broken up into 

pieces called plates. 

Mantle- is a highly viscous 

layer between the crust and 

the outer core. (made up of 

melted material.)

Outer Core- Layer inside 

Earth, between the mantle and 

the inner core made up of 

mostly liquid iron and nickel, 

and is about 1,400 miles thick.

Inner Core- The innermost 

part of the Earth, made of 

solid iron and nickel. (located 

beneath outer core, and 

hottest place in Earth's 

interior.)

Lithosphere- The rocky outer 

shell of Earth, which is made 

up for the crust and the rigid 

upper part of the mantle.(First 

layer beneath the continental 

crust.) 

Asthenosphere- 

Layer in the upper 

part of Earth's mantle  

that is made of 

material that can be 

reshaped and 

deformed, and on 

which the continents 

move. (Plastic-like 

layer of Earth beneath 

the Lithosphere)

Plasticity- The quality 

or state of being 

plastic.

Transform Boundary- 

Boundaries that form when two 

plates slide past each other.
