Christmas tree or Christmas boat?
According to an old Greek traditional custom, people would decorate a boat rather than a tree at Christmas time. This tradition represents the deeply rooted symbolic relationship between the Greeks and the sea. The main reason why this tradition started is that it was a way to thank Saint Nicholas, the patron Saint of sailors , for protecting the people who worked at sea. This Saint is celebrated on December 6, the day when many households start decorating their houses for Christmas.

The refugee's houses of Alexandra Avenue
The Alexandra Avenue refugee housing complex is an antiquated urban structure located in Athens, in the Ampelokipi area. The housing was built between 1933 and 1935 by the Greek state, which was looking for ways to house the hundreds of thousands of refugees who had flocked to Athens after the Asia Minor disaster 1922. The site where the apartment buildings were originally planned to be built was claimed by the agents and fans of Panathinaikos, who sought since 1922 to achive the construction of a stadium at this exact spot. A year later (1923) the construction was ignominiously stopped and the area was decided, based on a presidential decree, to expropriate it, to be used for the construction of refugee homes. Finally the solution was provided by the Municipality of Athens with a concession to the group of the plot and rehousing of the refugees in the exact opposite spot. In December 1944 during the Greek civil war the apartment buildings were targeted by warring groups with the marks of the blasts on the outer walls remaining as irrefutable witnesses.
l,

Due to the ugly appearance that these houses have fallen into in recent years, there have been protests from nearby residents who have had to do with complaints about the occupation of apartments by impoverished homeless people or even drug addicts, a risk to public health and aesthetic degradation of the area. In 2009, however, a decision issued by the KAE complicated the situation. According to its reasoning, the complex of refugee apartment buildings was characterized as monuments, based on their historical, cultural, socio-political and architectural background. The buildings are a sample of the architecture of the modern bauhaus movement. They have been declared monuments by the State, while there have been many considerations for the restoration and use, mainly for the residence, but also for the creation of a hostel for the relatives of the nearby St. Sabbas Hospital.

ºSaint Catherine Bonfireº
It is a tradition on the eve of Santa Catalina to see the bonfires that the neighborhood plants in the middle of the street.
All the neighbours burn the bonfires, and after 9pm the Queen and Ladies of the festival do a tour of all the bonfires. Then the "cremà" (the official bonfire) can be burned. Finally the public is able to taste "toña" (sweet bread) and hot chocolate. Inés SP
