Our flag is known by many names:

13 Stripes stands for the origional 13 colonies.

There are 50 stars one for each state.

Red stands for hardiness and valor, 

White symbolizes purity and innocence, 

Blue represents vigilance, 

perseverance and justice. 

Our flag has changed many times,

as our country grew more stars were added! 

This is what the first official American Flag looked like.

Legend has it that Betsy Ross sewed the first American Flag on May 1776.

Some people think that Francis Hopkinson made the first official flag.
