Winter traditions and customs in Vaslui

Caroling – Traditions and customs on the occasion of the Winter Holidays in different regions of the country

                  A well-known holiday custom is caroling, which begins on December 24 and can continue for 2 or 3 days. The caroling is usually attended by groups of children, young people or mature people, depending on the ethnographic area. The caroling takes place in the yard of those who receive the carolers, in the house or under the window. Carolers are often welcomed into the home as they are said to bring health and a prosperous year and are rewarded with nuts, apples, cakes and candies.

In the area of the mountain Banat, on Christmas Eve the fire in the house does not go out at all, so that the coming year will be bright and rich. On this day, the tree is decorated with sweets, and under the tree are placed: a roll, a sausage and a bottle of brandy - gifts for Santa Claus, and grains and hay are placed for his horse. In Maramureş, unlike other areas, the "grandfathers' game" takes place - caroling of the hosts by carolers disguised with masks. They wish health and happiness to the hosts. All carolers, regardless of age, receive a coil symbolizing the sun. They also get apples and nuts. On Christmas day, the laundry is not washed and nothing is lent. The animals in the yard receive plenty of food. It is said that if animals sleep on their left side then the winter will be long and frosty. And in the Moldovan area, Christmas is an important holiday. All the activities that take place on the day of the eve are actually a ritual for the protection of the animals, the orchards and the household: the women clean the whole house and prepare cakes, and the men take care to return anything borrowed.

 Sărbătoarea de Crăciun este cea mai așteptată sărbătoarea a anului, pentru că împodobim bradul, pe 23 mergem cu colinde prin tot satul, spunem „Bună dimineața Moșului!”, primind covrigi, mere, nuci, portocale, bomboane.

În noaptea de Crăciun, de multe ori nu dormeam, pentru că eram nerăbdători să-i ascultăm pe colindătorii care cântau „Steaua”, unul dintre cele mai frumoase cântece de Crăciun, care vestește nașterea lui Iisus Hristos.

Gazdele i-au primit cu dulciuri și bani.

    Carols

    One of the most beloved Christmas traditions is caroling. On the first day of Christmas, carolers go from house to house with the star in hand and announce the birth of Jesus to the people through songs and poems. It is said that the one who does not open the door to carolers will have an unproductive year and bad luck in the house, caused by the stinginess he has shown.

    In some areas of Moldova, in addition to the carolers, groups of masked people come out on the village streets - "babes and old men" who, through games, gestures and dialogue, convey wishes for the coming year.

    In the preparation of Christmas Eve, children of all ages are also involved, who, a long time before, prepared to walk with carols.
