This is a 3x3 magic square. All of the rows, 

columns, and diagonals add up to fifteen. The 

numbers one through nine go in the boxes. 

Each number can only be used once. 

This is part of a magic square and what 

a magic square would start out like 

before it is solved. The numbers used 

depend on the number of boxes, If 

there are twenty-five boxes, like in a 

5x5, then one through twenty-five 

would each be used once. Sometimes, 

the numbers used will depend on the 

sum that is used to solve the magic 

square. Each number is still only used 

once.  

Puzzles were developed around 1600 BC 

by Rhind Papyrus. Math puzzles are 

made up of simple processes, like 

addition, subtraction, multiplication, or 

division. Sometimes, puzzles use more 

than one process.
